About Me

I'm a graduate of NYU Shanghai, where I studied Interactive Media Arts and Creative Writing. I'm now a trans-disciplinary artist and activist. By day, my job is systems change work trying to bring about the solidarity economy, by night, I'm a club kid most comfortable in underground scenes. Both professionally and artistically, I work to understand community, care, culture and how computers and digital technologies affect those different worlds (for better and worse).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To open my eyes to other perspectives. It's easy to get caught up in your own mind and way of thinking, and staying in someone's home and seeing the way they live and swapping stories and lessons is the perfect way to see things from a new side.

Interests

I love listening to music, reading, and writing. On top of the basic touristy stuff, I plan on taking a lot of time to write about my experiences. If I stay with you, let me know and I'll likely be fine with letting you read some of my work!

Music, Movies, and Books

I've got a very varied taste in music, from newer indie stuff to some of the classics, I could talk for hours about my favorite bands. Book-wise, David Mitchell is my favorite living author, part of why I moved to Asia, and Brave New World is probably my favorite book. I've seen Inception 11 times, and Nolan's my favorite director.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I moved to Shanghai to go to a brand new school having never left America before.

Spent 3 months WWOOFing and couchsurfing across China. Ended up going to 北京,凤凰公社,呼和浩特,乌鲁木齐,石河子,成都,龙兴,and 昆明.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm currently a student, and I should be bringing a few books with me, so I'd be happy to teach what I've learned over the past year about philosophy, politics, art and the like.

好好学习,天天向上 right? I'm constantly in learning mode, looking to understand things that don't make sense to me. And I think that's part of the beauty of couchsurfing, meeting people that come from different experiences so you can compare notes and take away the important lessons from the overlap.

I can share stories of my adventures and my own perspectives on life. I've been to over 15 Chinese cities/towns, ranging from small family farms to the most populous city in the world, and I'd love to tell you about what I've seen.

Also I'm crazy into music. I'm the guy that'll say "I listen to everything" when asked for my favorites, and I'm serious. Current obsessions are Warpaint, Beach House, and Everything Everything though. So feel free to also ask for music recommendations and stories of meeting bands and stuff.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share with you the stuff I've written, story ideas I plan to turn to life, pictures I've taken, stories from the road, music I've discovered, and my opinions/worldview.
