About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Enjoy LA

ABOUT ME

Hey! Majored in creative writing. Grew up in the midwest, went to LA for college. I love LA; its grungy bustle, its crazy diversity, its wonderful movie theaters.

I like to live simply, see movies, read books, take walks. Getting ready to move back home to KC, but enjoying my final days in the deranged paradise that is Los Angeles.

I'm a pretty low-maintenance, nice, considerate guy. Not a crazy partier-- I keep it pretty sober all around. But I'm a very open minded person, so don't worry about getting judged if you are into stuff I'm not. Coming out as gay taught me a lot about common grace and hearing people out without writing them off.

I like to go on adventures and walks by myself. I like solitude. But I also love good conversations; I'm not a hermit.

I like conservative Christians and I like super-liberal atheists and everything in between, so host me and let me get to know you!

PHILOSOPHY

"Unless love is the force undergirding out efforts to transform society, we lose our way."- bell hooks

Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.- Micah 6:8 (If you're an atheist, feel free to leave off the last three words).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I can host in my spacious micro-loft. It's not spacious at all. I'm also getting ready to travel a bit.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Couch Surfed across the USA on a cross-country road trip. Met awesome people, had a great time, became a big fan of couch surfing.

Interests

I'm a big movie and literature consumer (I also love movie theaters and bookstores as spaces and social hubs). Current interest-- Graphic novels, Cormac McCarthy, abortion literature/film, and any film with Tilda Swinton in it.

Love exploring-- taking walks, bike rides, wandering through cities.

Public Transportation-- big advocate.

Tutoring, hanging out with young adults.

Queer culture, being opened to different perspectives on sexuality (even conservative ones).

Religion, faith, and theology-- have been reading theology stuff my whole life. What makes people tick spiritually is deeply interesting to me. If you like to talk about that stuff, we'll probably hit it off famously.

Trying to learn to respect other people more every day.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I once walked thirteen miles from downtown LA to the beach. LA's such a car city, I just wanted to know what it felt like to walk it. One of the coolest afternoons of my life. So neat to see the different strata of the city as I progressed from Expo Park through Pico Union to Culver City to the beach cities. Ended with skinny dipping in the Pacific in the dark of the night. Took the bus back home, naturally. My feet hurt.

Couch surfed across the US!

Biked like 14 miles across LA in a sundress once. Good times.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you about the best movie theaters in America.

I can teach you about LA and Kansas City (public transportation, cool places to go, great places to eat).

I can teach you what hybrid-lit is.

I can teach about the ways abortion has been represented in English language literature in the past 100 years (thesis topic!)

I can teach about conservative Christian theology, midwest-strain.

I'd love to learn about: queer theory (political, lit), feminist theory (political, lit), the transgender experience, religious conversion experiences, non-profit/NGO's that are doing good work, about the city you live in
