About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Trying to get back into couchsurfing

ABOUT ME

Hi. I'm Mário. I'm a citizen of the world. I like to think of myself as the proverbial open-minded person, which is always a problem when I realize that all of us, in one way or another, are bigoted ;)

I don't smoke , and don't do drugs. I didn't use to mind the smoking, but since I moved out of Portugal I've stopped being tolerant to the smoke smell...

I'm constantly criticized by mommy and daddy back home for not having any steady steering over my own life - I guess that says a thing or two... But I like it that way. I've had the boring, controlled, steady, routine-based life centering around full-time work and university in the not-so-far past and I don't miss it one bit. Right now I'm happier than ever and want to spread the good vibes :)

Some straightforward facts about Le Mário:
- Non-smoker. Loathe it when people smoke indoors.
- Drinker. When appropriate.
- Compulsive hitchhiker.
- Occasional dumpsterdiver in the past.
- Sarcastic bastard.
- Desenrascado (you can ask me what this means, if you're not Portuguese).
- Metalhead. No, I won't devour your children.
- Methodically spontaneous. I'm capable of planning something (like a trip) down to the details, while considering several angles and possibilities. I'm just as capable of dismissing all the plans on a whim and just doing something else that seems more interesting at the time.
- If when you read that I listen to metal, your first emotion was disgust or repugnance or you thought "all he listens to is noise and grunting", and you write in your profile that you're "open minded", then I don't like you.
- I'm ignorant about many cultures. But I want to learn much and more about all, even if I end up not relating to them or even understanding them.
- Music is not "just music". If you think that, I don't like you. If you say it to me, I will be unpleasant. If you take my music away from me, I'll get really unpleasant. If you diss my music, I will diss your face.

PHILOSOPHY

Not philosophizing about life too much.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I surf, I host, I recruit new people on my travels. My hideous charisma can often be smelled at CS events.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Been on a bit of a hiatus for a couple of years as my life took several turns, but getting back into the spirit of things now.

Interests

Leaving my comfort zone.
Music. Weird please.
Dancing. You name it.
Writing, as long as it's not about me. Usually.
Getting up in the early morning, pulling the white curtain aside and walking to the balcony to greet the first rays of sunlight.
Repeating myself.
Having Belgian beer in good company in a nearly-lonely balcony with beautiful scenery, at dusk.
Observing the immense sea. Nothing can get your mind off of the crowded, civilized, complex world behind you, as well as the rampant waves ramming mercilessly against the shore.
Indulging in mindless irresponsibility once in a blue moon. Preferably without endangering anyone else.
Being gifted with the experience of observing someone and feeling like you can tell a story about them, purely as a result of observation.
Walking away from metaphysical pseudo-erudite jibber-jabbery gibberish chats, into mind-stimulating, relevant ones.
Mood swings.
Repeating myself.
Hiking. Especially at night.
Koskenkorva.
Playing guitar. Electric or acoustic, from heavy metal to soft ballads.
Finnish sauna.
Frozen lakes.

Music, Movies, and Books

Tough one, especially the music part. You see, as cheesy, cliché, and prone to causing eyerolling as it might be, music is my life, and so far there is not one single thing I would put above it. I have yet to find any state of mind that can not be perfectly complemented with some genre of music.

Having crossed over that disclaimer, I suppose I listen to rock and metal most of the time. My personal soundtrack at the moment includes Turisas, King Diamond, Amorphis and (paradoxally) Mostly Autumn during walks in the snow; Airbourne when it's party time; Sentenced on the pleasantly lonely moments or when hitchhiking in Lapland in the winter; Beatles when rocking out with my flatmate in our awesome living room; Diablo Swing Orchestra, when observing people in the bus stop (I kid you not); Flogging Molly when drinking beer in obscene quantities (rare); Korpiklaani when drinking viina in obscene quantities (fortunately even rarer); Pink Floyd, Sofia Jannok, The Doors, Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong when enjoying a glass of scotch and watching the snow at night... I'm getting long-winded considering most of you won't even read this. If you do, bring it up with me, I'd love to talk about my number one passion :)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

3000+km hitchhiking trip throughout all of Finland in the cold of Winter.

Teach, Learn, Share

Hmm.
I know a good bit about portuguese wines (although I'm no expert at all)
I know a good bit about beers (am I starting to sound like an alcoholic already?)
I'm a musicholic. From heavy metal (something I consider myself a connoisseur of) to chillout house music, through experimental progressive weirdness and piano-based classical music, with a touch of ANYTHING DANCEABLE, I can show you how even when there seems to be nothing else in life... if you've got your music, you're never alone.
I can teach you PROGRAMMING I'm sure you want that, it's the greatest thing in life...... Right, I couldn't even write that with a straight face.

Countries I’ve Visited

Belgium, Canada, Estonia, Germany, Gibraltar, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States
