Sobre mí

I'm Kat! Grew up in south east Michigan, moved to Oakland, California after college when the Polar Vortex made Michigan winter unbearable even for a native. It's been fun, but looking for the right next place to move on to. I'm a certified yoga teacher, generally trying to put out good vibes and leave the world a little better than I found it.

Music festivals, camping, and finding odd, lovely little ground scores make me happy. Tell me about your favorite hiking trails and yoga studios. I love the little places I would never find without some local help.

Por qué estoy en Couchsurfing

I want to see this beautiful world without shutting myself up in a hotel away from all the real parts and people of it. There is nothing better than getting to a new city and getting lost, and found, then lost again with the help of some new, local friends.

Intereses

Yoga. If I hadn't been painfully obvious about that yet... I'm down to try any kind of yoga at least once, and I'm always looking for a skilled acro yoga base, although I've been out of practice for a minute. I love music festivals because they're such a great place to shut up and be awed by talented people doing their thing.

Música, películas y libros

I could go for days on music. Griz and Grieves will always have a special place in my heart. My favorites have been artists that find intersections between genres. Where funk meets electronic or hip hop meets soul...things like that make me smile.

Algo increíble que he hecho

I doubt this is "amazing" but I've gone to festivals by myself. At Electric Forest 2014 I turned off my phone, left the kids I came with, and decided to sink-or-swim make new friends. After five minutes of feeling incredibly stupid walking around in my hippie pants and gold head chain, this guy comes up to me. "I like your headdress." So I swam and asked to join his crew for the next set. And just like that I have two people on either side of me holding each of my hands as we run to the front of the stage. In the same spirit I went to Tomorrowworld 2014 (I strongly advise against going to any of the TomorrowWORLD festivals for a slew of reasons) solo, not knowing a soul in Georgia. I always feel like an idiot for the first while, getting over that sensation that people are staring and judging that I'm there alone and I shouldn't have come. And sometimes you have to sit with that uncomfortable feeling for a long while. But in the end I had the time of my life and make friends I'm closer to after four days than I am with some people with whom I spent four years of college. Moral: do your thing, be smart about taking risks, but otherwise give zero cares. Your family will find you.

Enseña, aprende, comparte

There is this one yoga teacher in the city where I come from whom I very deeply respect. My favorite thing that she's taught me is how to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. That's a weird notion, but if you think about it, it's when we're uncomfortable that we're growing. It's when we learn to breathe through the anxiety that we start to notice what made us that way. When we notice what produced that response, we can start to choose if we want to respond in a different way. When we learn how to relax into intense sensations, everything stills, and you find the quiet space where you get to decide how you want to move forward. She puts it a thousand times better than I have, but it's an interesting notion to roll around in your head.
