About Me

I currently live in Fairbanks, Alaska, and really hope to be a host when I can get my own place. I am up here studying sea ice, and learning how to be a general badass at life.

I miss dancing so much, but am learning to snowboard and rock climb and cross-country ski, so there are ups and downs to everything :) I enjoy genuine connections with people, having real conversation and would love to meet you to share experiences and perspectives.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

You can learn something from everyone.
I always find that my best experiences are when I meet people who live in the places I am travelling through. I like to make connections with people. When I went to Nepal I met someone through Trekking Partners, Nissan, now a lifelong friend. I stayed at his friend Gyan's place the first night I arrived (also an amazing friend now!), trekked with him for twelve days over a ridiculous pass in winter, got lost, spent Christmas eve in a guesthouse in Langtang valley drinking rum and dancing to gangnam style, went to his cousin's wedding after party, had lunch at his aunties' houses and went on day tours of Kathmandu to his favourite places. These friendships and experiences are unique, and only come if you, in the words of Gregory David Roberts of Shantaram, "surrender yourself [to India]".

I am a more grounded and open person because of my travels.

Interests

I love...numbers, black coffee, sand between my toes, climbing trees, surfing, real conversation, swimming in the sea, people with energy, a really good book, walking in the bush, capoeira, family, exploring, learning languages, knitting baby clothes for all my friends having bubbas, growing veges, dancing (a jack of all and a master of none), trying everything once and learning how to do things out of my comfort zone.

Music, Movies, and Books

Books - Skallagrigg, Surely you're joking Mr Feynman, Seeds of Hope (Jane Goodall), A Fine Balance (Rohinton Mistry), Shantaram, 1984, The Omnivore's Dilemma, Moloka'i, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks are a few of my favs, but I am always reading something. Second hand book shopping on travels, or swapping books with new friends is the best way to go :)

Music - I love anything I can dance to, especially latin music.
A random selection...Hozier, O Rappa, Half Moon Run, Orishas, Calle 13, Rodriguez, Lorde, Fiona Apple, the Strokes, Neil Young, Salmonella Dub, Buena Vista Social Club, Sublime, Stromae, Exaltasamba...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Trekked in Nepal, both with my incredible Nepali friends, and solo. Nepal is one of the most incredible places, and the people are some of the most generous I have ever met.

Moved to the end of the world.

Competed in the World Championships for Sport Capoeira.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love challenging conversation, talking about religion, culture, education, spirituality, love, equality, life, journeys...when I travel I find these conversations in abundance, and they stretch me and teach me and continue to shape me...I can share this, a genuine wonder about the world and interest in learning your views.
I would also like to share a common love for handstands and backflips.

I like to learn how to cook food wherever I go, I think cooking and food bring people together and teach you so much about a culture.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Stories! I can cook for you, and hang out (or not). And love trying everything once, with a smile on my face!
