Teach, Learn, Share
You can make your own backpacker's stove that can heat up a single meal or boil water for up to two, and here's how. On our hikes, these 'penny stoves' are hard, cheap to fuel, small, and replaceable and giftable! They are all around perfect. Just make sure you have a flat surface to cook on!
You will need two soda/coke/pop/fizzy cans. cut the bottom about 1/3 the way down from both cans. Put a piece of fiberglass (or other nonflamable absorbent) in the bottom of one, and delicately and slowly, force one can bottom inside the other. Drill a ring of holes in the 'top' of your new contraption (it should look like two bottoms on each end) and one a bit larger hole in the middle. Add a penny/ruble/small coin and presto!
Add alcohol slowly to can, through middle hole. Only a little is necessary! light the top of the can where you poured the alky and your stove is ready.
These directions are horrible! Sorry I'm doing this from memory. If you are even remotely interested in this venture, clearer instructions can be found here: http://www.jureystudio.com/pennystove/stove.html
(Although his instructions use thre cans, you can make yours with two if you must, like we did)
