ABOUT ME

Hi! I'm Katie, nice to meet you! I left my beautiful country Ireland two summers ago to work in Japan as an English teacher. For the first year I woke each morning with the mighty Mt. Fuji outside my window. The second year it was the Tokyo buzz that got me up. In my time there I had the best of both, countryside and city life, and I did a whole lot of traveling in between. I'm currently soaking up what else Asia has to offer as I make my way back via Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

I'm a film school grad but my preference is photography. I always have a camera with me and am looking for new ways to capture the world. Street photography is what I love and it's how I've learnt to make the most of a city.

Before I left Japan I started a personal photo project to remember my time there and most importantly all the great people I met. A lot of foreginers move to Japan but not everyone can make it their home. I had watched friends grow frustrated at their inability to feel truly comfortable and others who had found themselves a niche they would be reluctant to leave behind. And so Home from Home was born. I've photographed 27 people so far with various interpretations of home. There's been musicians, yoga teachers, coffee fans, train enthusiasts, husbands, girlfriends, and people who just love getting lost in the city. This experience has opened my little world up in ways I couldn't imagine and I have been welcomed warmly into the figurative home of everyone involved.

I have a little German, a little Japanese and a little Irish (I can try and teach you if you want!) I'm a very easy going person who's always up for an adventure. I really love to meet and get to know new people and this is my main motivation to participate in couchsurfing.

PHILOSOPHY

I firmly believe that you have a little to learn from everybody on this planet. No one is too insignificant to help you out in learning something new. I want to meet as many people as possible and learn as much as I can.

Since leaving Japan I've taken my photography project on the road with me and am currently working on it here in Phnom Penh. I am always looking for participants and always looking to learn something from them about their experience of living away from home. I've learnt there's nothing better than to sit with an eager ear and an open mind giving someone a chance to talk about what is most precious to them. I've had nothing but wonderful experineces and hope to continue this when I return to Ireland and beyond.
