About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'd like to get back into travel after a few years out of the scene. I have settled in the UK which makes Europe far more accessible to me. I am still into small towns, understanding local life, and learning as much as I can about the people around me.

ABOUT ME

I am quietly curious, generally an introvert, but enjoy conversations with interesting people. I'm just not very good at small talk, unfortunately. I love traditional folk music from many different cultures; if you are a musicophile, please do share your collection with me! I have been told I am good guest, and try to uphold the standards of the home.
I do suffer from sciatica, but am still determined to travel. I only write this to let potential hosts know that I cannot sleep on thin mats on even floors, walk for very long periods of time (I do enjoy a hike and have done some of the best!). I also have a have a gnarly cat allergy, and although I bring antihistamines wherever I go, they just don't cut it sometimes.

I have loved travel my entire life. My mother worked for the airlines (still does), and instilled in me the importance of getting out and learning about the world and everyone in it. Travel makes me happier than anything else, it helps me to truly realize how small I am in comparison to this great, big world of ours. I always think, as I am typing this, someone is being born, someone is dying, someone is falling in love, getting married, crying, laughing, sleeping, waking, maybe thinking just the same thing I am right now. And, I don't want to live my life just wondering about all these people, I want to go and experience as much as I possibly can in the short time I have left here. The reason this site is so important is because of the way it approaches travel. You can get on a plane and stay in a hotel, see the attractions, but the land is the same, the sky is the same, it's the people that make travel rich, and many of us have forgotten that. It's the culture, it's the speech, the customs, the spirit!

So, with all that said, I'd love to come visit you and I'll gladly return the favor! I live in a small apartment in Salt Lake City, Utah. For now!! I'm in the 9th & 9th neighborhood, if you google search "9th & 9th Salt Lake City" you can get an idea of the town. It's hipster enough to appease the growing population of mustachio coffee connoisseurs, but quiet and private enough just to be a nice little moment away from home. It's close to both downtown SLC and downtown Sugarhouse, there's lots to do for young'ins: Live music, bars, late-night weirdo hippie stuff, etc. And for those of you who enjoy something a little more roots-y--we're also just a few minutes from those gorgeous snow-capped mountains! We've got great food, talented musicians, and more ethnic and cultural diversity than ever before.

If you got through all of this, thank you! If not, it's okay, I'm no stickler.

PHILOSOPHY

I don't think I've got one yet, at least not some concise little ditty I can write here.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

In the past, I flew non-rev, standby, so my trips tended to be very spur-of-the-moment. Not many hosts were up for that, but now I usually travel by train or bus, so I can plan things a bit more aptly with potential hosts. I am not in a position to host at my current place, but am always up for a meet-up if you ever find yourself near Leeds, UK.

Interests

History, art, music, writing, language, small spaces, the old and the wise, history, historical re-enactment, historical cookery, collecting books I probably don't need, the smell of an old book shop and the old man behind the counter--hearing his stories.

I just want to learn. Forever.

Music, Movies, and Books

Oh, I don't choose favorites. I will always like classical music more than anything, and think there is a piece for every moment in one's life. Right now I'm very into Polish folk music because Zimna Wojna is one of the best films I have ever seen. Books? Books, you ask? I could never commit to any small number. Right now I'm reading a Mennonite country cooking book, a book on M-theory, and just finished one on Dag Hammarskjold's musings.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Climbed Mount Olympos over a three day period.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you how to interpret late medieval culinary manuscripts and probably a bit of rudimentary nedlework. I crochet and knit. Any English help, I'm your girl.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Hopefully good conversation, stories, insights...I'm not sure, I don't want to give unrealistic expectations.

Countries I’ve Visited

Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Virgin Islands, U.S.

Countries I’ve Lived In

England, United States
