Music, Movies, and Books

I love contemporary literature - basically, prose that borders on poetry (e.g, Toni Morrison). I tend to like independent more than mainstream movies, yet two of my favorites are "Harold and Maude" and "Ferris Bueller!" (I also have an inordinate fondness for movie musicals like "Singin' in the Rain" and "White Christmas!") As for music, I love Liz Phair, Bjork, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and discovering new artists!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was in the Peace Corps (in Africa in 1993), which was amazing in itself, I fantasized about returning home and rafting the Grand Canyon. I looked into it after I returned home, but never took any action to make it happen. Then, in 2006, out of the blue, a friend of mine invited me to go on a private 18-day Grand Canyon rafting trip! The trip definitely had its hardships (e.g., 110-degree days, 5 boat flips, etc.), but rafting this incredibly powerful river between the majestic walls of the canyon felt like being transported back in time. It was amazing.
