ABOUT ME

My name is Kathryn, and I am from a small town in Vermont, a beautiful mountainous state in the Northeast of the US. I love home but i often get fidgety to explore elsewhere, and it's always great to come back after a long time away. I have a passion for traveling and experiencing new cultures. I took a gap year before college to travel around Europe for 7 months. Before that I was in Costa Rica and the British Virgin Islands among other places. I WWOOFed (volunteered on organic farms) in Italy, Spain, and Tortola, BVI. In Costa Rica I was studying at a language school. I am a very open-minded and genuine person who loves to have fun, meet new people, and explore places I have never been! It's a big world out there and i intend to make it feel a little smaller.

PHILOSOPHY

The mother of one of my friends told me this the other day when i was struggling with religion/beliefs. I thought it made a lot of sense...

"We are all of the same mold, no matter whether religious, agnostic or atheist. It is not in what group you proclaim yourself to be, but how you move through your life, how you use your own gifts, no matter how big or small, with compassion and humility sharing the graces you have been given from whomever you deem gave them to you. "

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I couchsurfed in Sevilla, Malaga, Cadiz, and Barcelona while I was in Spain. In Fall 2011, I studied in Holland and couchsurfed while traveling on the weekends! I get along with everyone and am a very clean and appreciative guest. Staying with people who know the area and forming lifelong connections is such an excellent way to travel! When I'm at school at Emerson College in downtown Boston, I unfortunately can't host. But if I have time I would love to meet up for coffee or a tour of my section of the city! When I'm at home in Vermont, there is plenty of room for outdoorsy couchsurfers!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

So far all experiences have been great ones. The best story would have to be my good friend Mathieu...

We met while living in Trellis Bay, this hipped out surreal place in the British Virgin Islands in the Carribean, where everyone is a little crazy and outoftouch with the world, but in a good way! Anyways, we instantly became friends, he is from France and at that time was hitchhiking boats throughout the Carribean, making his way to Florida. Anyways, a few months after i returned home, I got an email from him saying he had made it from Florida to Boston hitchhiking, and he was coming to Vermont in a few days! So he stayed at my house for a week, i had a great time showing him around and catching up.

And this winter I went to France and stayed with him and his family in Bordeaux for a month, throughout Christmas and New Years. We biked around the city, went skiing in the mountains, hiked the largest sand dune in Europe, awesome stuff like that.

Anyways, I guess what i'm trying to say is that with Couchsufing, you never know the kind of people you are going to meet, and the great impact that they may make on your life. With couchsurfing, you can become such good friends with people that you never would have even met if not for this community, people who live a life completely different than your own but with at least one thing in common: A passion for life, culture, and travel!

Music: I like the singer songwriter types... ben harper, alexi murdoch, jamie cullum, dave matthews, michael franti, amos lee, mason jennings, martin sexton, tracy chapman, chris thile, iron and wine, etc... Jay Z, The Roots. And then you have to love the oldies... Neil Young's After the Goldrush is my favorite album of all time, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday...

Movies: I like movies that hit you hard... The Pianist, American History X, The Life of David Gale... On a lighter note i'm also a fan of comedies, Anchorman, A Night at the Roxbury, Old School, etc... And really, where would we be without Free Willy and The Fox and the Hound?

Books: I'm reading El Alquimista right now and loving it... To Kill a Mockingbird, 100 Years of Solitude, Poetry by Emily Dickinson, Naomi Shihab Nye, Saul Williams. Of course the Harry Potters. Travel books and maps, Time Magazine and The Week in the morning with breakfast is ideal.
