ABOUT ME

I'm friendly ,generous,well-read,interested in many things. The older I get the more I realize how lucky I was to be born when I was (1950) and where I was (in Canada) I enjoy cooking for the crew on the ferry where I work. Each year I try to travel at least twice outside of eastern Canada - in my spare time this summer I have painted a century-old lighthouse near my home on Deer Island - last year I travelled to Hawaii - hiked in a volcano and surfed! Also travelled to Portugal and Berlin. Have been to Hawaii again this year & Mexico City for the first time in 36 years! Having lived all my life in a fishing village with 120 people I am always fascinated by cities - the bigger the better!

PHILOSOPHY

As I said before I am happy that I was born where I was and when I was and I want to see as much of planet earth as I can - the variety of life on earth is mind-boggling and I want to experience as much as I can while I am still able.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I try to be a good citizen of Deer Island - I regularly clean roadsides and public spaces - have taken it upon myself to paint the local lighthouse after the government gave up maintaining lighthouses - help publish a community newspaper three or four times a year - helped establish a tourist info. Centre here and build gazebo at the ferry landing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have no official couchsurfing experience (having used international hostels for many years) but have hosted many friends and friends of friends either using my guest room or camping in my backyard. I enjoy people and my job on the ferry provides the perfect opportunity to meet travellers from many countries.

Interests

The world in general! I enjoy biking and rowing a small boat for exercise - I enjoy travelling very much having been to over forty countries - 2013 is my year for "m" places - by new years 2014 I will have been to Maui, Molokai, Mexico City, Meteora Greece and Munich! I have many friends in many countries as well as here on Deer Island.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm not a big movie or TV fan - although I do enjoy good investigative journalism on TV (although I fear the networks are doing less and less investigative documentaries) I read architecture, travel and natural history books ( the degradation of the environment and wildlife I find extremely worrying) I enjoy all types of music except rap and hip- hop which I don't consider music (I call them patterned noise!)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Hiked the Grand Canyon, visited Soweto,burned my hand on a volcanic rock in Iceland, biked the coast of California, surfed in Hawaii at the age of 62 - seen killer whales, grizzly bears, kangaroos, keas, and an ark-full of African animals in their natural habitats

Hopefully couch surfing will expand many people's horizons and increase knowledge of and concern for this incredible 'blue planet'
