Overview
About Me
I'm a teacher / educator who lives in Tok, Alaska, and who loves to travel and explore new places. My wife and I first used Couchsurfing in the U.K. when we bike toured from Wales to Scotland. It's been great to meet new people and experience the place / culture firsthand. Since then, we've tried to give back through hosting other travelers, but have been living pretty well off the common path (Southeast Alaska, for instance) and so haven't received many requests. Now that we're on the Alaska Highway in Tok, I look forward to meeting more people!
I enjoy the outdoors - hiking, climbing, mountaineering, skiing, packrafting, etc... but have many other interests. I think that I'm a teacher partially because I'm interested in about everything.
My wife, Sarah, and I have two kids (7 and 5) who are adorable. We also have two dogs, who are also adorable (slightly less than the kids, but only slightly). Let me know if you're passing through and want to experience a bit of what life is like here in Interior Alaska; if time allows, I'd be happy to show you some good hikes or trails in the Alaska Range, or just visit and trade stories.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
The community. Travel should be about meeting new people, forming new relationships, and experiencing life to its fullest. Too often we are shelled into thinking that everyone is surrounded by their own personal bubble, unable to welcome strangers and to realize the humanity that connects us. Our Couchsurfing hosts have been honest, generous, and real, and I aspire to be the same.
Interests
Pretty much anything? I can't think of anything that I don't really like to do. Generally, I gravitate toward being outside, but there's much more I'm interested in.
- writing
- reading
- music
- outdoor activities
- mountaineering
- biking
- outdoors
- climbing
- anything outdoors
Music, Movies, and Books
Music: Mumford and Sons?
Movies: Hmm.... It's hard to pick a favorite movie. I enjoy good dramas, comedies, and in between, so that's difficult.
Books: Life of Pi comes to mind; I enjoy a variety of books though, from non-fiction, to fiction, to informational, etc.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I don't really like bragging, but I guess that growing up in wilderness Alaska was very unique. It definitely shaped who I am.
Teach, Learn, Share
I'm happy to help when time allows with showing anyone around Interior Alaska, especially in the Alaska Range, if you're interested. I'm also always looking for avid mountaineering / packrafting partners, if you have experience there!
