About Me

CURRENT MISSION

My current mission is to live forever or die trying.

ABOUT ME

"There is no short answer when you ask Kevin 'What have you been up to?'" I'm quite sure my friends would say I'm the type of guy who can find adventure everywhere, and that I'm perhaps too nomadic for my own good.

I consider myself very open-minded, and am willing to try a lot of different things. I'm definitely more of a night person than a day person, and like cooler temperatures. I enjoy cooking, and learning new recipes. I've also been to the moon.

Ok, that was a lie, but the rest of that is true.

Sorry about all the sentences starting with "I".

PHILOSOPHY

The way I see it, there's about 150 million square kilometers of land, 1.3 billion cubic kilometers of ocean, over 17 trillion cubic kilometers of atmosphere, and nearly 38 million square kilometers of moon, and we've only got a handful of decades to experience it in.

In my travels, I've taken myself more than 3500 metres above ground, 960 metres underground, 40 metres undersea, been as far north as Franklin's Expedition, and farther south than "Crocodile Dundee". I've sat and watched the Aurora Borealis and hurled myself through the air at over 100 metres per second. I've been in love, I've been in hate, I've been in awe, and I've been in disgust. I've saved lives, and I've made decisions that probably cost lives. I've done more than most people, and I choose to share my experiences with anyone who's interested.

...and sometimes with those who are disinterested, but too polite to say so, as I get excited, and fail to notice subtle yawns.

I feel that Faith is a wonderful thing, and that Religion causes about as much harm as good. I feel that the human body is nothing to be ashamed of, and that double-dipping is nothing to be afraid of.

I also think it's surprisingly hard to find German love songs on youtube.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm very new to this site, but I think it's a great idea already. Looking forward to having my place fixed up enough to participate!

Interests

I'm a "serious amateur" photographer, and I love taking the time to see the world from a different perspective, or at a different time than most people do. I love exploring, whether it's a walk through town, or renting a plane and flying across the country. Most of the time lately, though, I've been low on funds, so I got a telescope and have been exploring the night sky.

Music, Movies, and Books

My favourite movies are Last Holiday, Alien, Shawshank Redemption, and John Carter (I don't care what the critics say about it).

I don't read as many books as I'd like to, but my favourites are Fate is the Hunter, Dracula, and Ender's Game.

In terms of music, my taste is all over the spectrum, though one of my friends pointed out, a few years ago, that all my favourite music has a march beat to it. So basically, if you can chant "Left right left right left right left" to it, I'll probably like it. Generally speaking though, I like industrial music and the more powerful classical music.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The absolute most awesome thing I've ever experienced was when my one-day old nephew, cradled in my arms, grabbed hold of my finger. For a brief moment, I had a vision of all the potential he had before him, and it overwhelmed me.

A very close second was 14 years earlier, laying in my sleeping bag in an Eucalyptus forest in Australia, looking up at the middle of the Milky Way. Seeing 400 billion stars all at once gave me the distinct impression of being microscopically insignificant, while at the same time, imagining the possibilities if we could just start getting off-planet.

Teach, Learn, Share

I enjoy scenic photography. Want to go take pictures some time? I also enjoy astronomy, though I'm just learning about it. Can you teach me something new?

Are you a scuba diver? A pilot? Let's go for a dive or a flight, or just talk about our favourite dives or do some hangar flying.
