If you plan on travelling in Japan, I highly recommend getting a Japan Rail Pass. It is an unlimited pass for a period of time on the Japan Rail system, which includes the bullet train. Regular price for bullet train can cost 100 dollars round trip. If you plan on hitting up many cities in Japan, it is definitely worth it, but you can only get it in countries OUTSIDE of Japan so purchase it before you come.
