ABOUT ME

Many people send us requests without checking our profile, so to make things easy, some details about us:

We are a nomadic sailing ship. We are not locals. Most of us are french .

. It is worth mentioning because too many people contact us without any mention of the fact that we are on a boat in their request, having obviously copy pasted the same message to anybody around. That's not what couchsurfing is about. So if you do not mention something personal and relevant to us, anything about us being on a sailboat for example, we won't consider your request deserves a response.

Now, here is more info about us:
Karaka is a 53 ft black steel ketch. In an effort to share, learn and grow, the boat is operated as a non profit cooperative, welcoming as crew anybody motivated to join with an open mind. The crew is usually but not always composed of a healthy mix of nomadic dreamers, musicians, philosophers, anarchists, wanderers and assorted non-conforming individuals, as well as less radical people, regardless of nationality, age, gender, worldview, background, or financial status. Attitude is what matters. We sail, explore and discover with limited planning and scheduling.
Karaka is a big boat. She is rough and less than shiny, standing apart from the usual Average White Boat, or Yacht. She is run with limited funds on a cost sharing basis, and as such is far from perfect. She is seaworthy enough to undertake major ocean crossings, but is not really boat show material. Still the quirks and flaws give her a magnetic charm and her character and the motley crew attracts attention wherever we go.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

The crew is usually on board for several months, but more often than not when we are in harbor people come and go and so there is almost always some room on board for a few couchsurfers willing to crash on the saloon couch or on deck. We also are a merry bunch and so we organize parties on board regularly, to which nearby couchsurfers and hosts are more than welcome to participate. We see the couchsurfing experience as a sharing thing, an exchange, and that means we are not interested in hosting people who are merely looking for a cheap and convenient accommodation.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Couchsurfing experience has been great so far, with dozens of people staying on the boat while we were at anchor in port. Some couchsurfers actually stayed longer than expected and joined the crew for weeks or months.

Interests

We are interested in sharing and learning, and so meeting as many people as possible helps with that. We're interested in showing travelers that the sailing lifestyle is not solely for older rich people. We're interested in changing the way people think about the world and act about it. We're interested in creating a sustainable lifestyle for ourselves, a lifestyle that stays exciting and rewarding no matter where we are and what we do. We're interested in showing that lifestyle to others.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

18 years of adventures all over the world. pristine coral reefs. Deserted islands. Weeks offshore. Tremendous storms. Pirates. Being mistaken for seafood by sealife. And sharing all this with dozens of people.
