About Me

Hello there, I'm Kevin. I live in the heart of downtown Toronto. I was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, but grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. Since 2007, I've been living in Toronto, so I consider myself a Torontonian.

I'm currently in the process of completing my Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation. I currently work as an accountant.

I'm a huge Edmonton Oilers and Seattle Seahawks fan.

I'm also an atheist.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I was introduced to Couchsurfing in May 2013 through a good friend of mine at work. However, I didn't really use CS until about November 2013 when I began my 8.5 month world expedition. While travelling, I was fortunate enough to be invited by numerous couchsurfing hosts in different cities. I've also made efforts to join up with other CouchSurfers in the various cities I was visited and shared travel stories and experiences.

Couchsurfing provides a wonderful opportunity to learn about foreign cultures from the perspective of a local. Speaking from experience, I find that when I stay with Couchsurfers as I find a deeper appreciation of the local area compared to staying in hostels.

I also, on occasion, attend Couchsurfing Meetings here in Toronto to meet up with locals and other Couchsurfers.

After being hosted by numerous Couchsurfers in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, I felt obligated to give back to the CS community by hosting travellers that come to Toronto. On Dec 21, 2014, I hosted my first couchsurfer.

Interests

My interests are travelling, meeting new people, learning new cultures, reading, hanging out with friends, etc. Having travelled for 9 months across 20 countries, I still have that "itch" to keep exploring the other corners of the world. South America, Oceania, and Antarctica are the only three continents left that I've yet to set foot on. It is my lifelong dream to be one of the few souls out of 7 billion in the world to have set foot on all seven continents in one lifetime.

Outside of travelling, hockey and football are my passion. My favourite NHL and NFL teams are Edmonton Oilers and Seattle Seahawks, respectively.

I'm an atheist and proud. I make no apologies for my lack of belief in a deity. I have no quarrels with people who are religious. When religious beliefs are imposed on someone, that's where I draw the line. Religious freedom should end when human rights abuses begin.

I may or may not discuss politics. I understand that politics can be divisive at times. In these polarizing times, I think dialogue and conversations are key to reduce polarization. I may disagree with what you say but I'll defend your right to say it.
With that said, politically, I'm a classical liberal. I lean centre-left socially and centre-right fiscally. You can argue that I have a bit of a libertarian streak as I'm skeptical of big government or the "nanny state".
If you disagree with me, let's have a conversation!

Music, Movies, and Books

My favourite movies ares Star Wars, Jurassic Park, the Nolan Batman trilogy, Inception, and countless other. It would take too long for me to list all the movies I'm a fan of.

I also read a lot of atheist literature and science books. I'm a devout and unapologetic atheist and I believe reason and logic should prevail over religious dogmatism. Some of my favourite authors include Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens.

I've also gotten into Jordan Peterson's work. I'm currently reading his international best seller, 12 Rules for Life. I'm also a fan of these intellectual's works: Jonathan Haidt, Peter Boghossian, etc

Forgive me if I don't know or never heard of a popular song, I've been out of the Top40 "know it all" business for almost a decade.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

From November 3, 2013 - July 14, 2014, I've left the comfort of my home to go travelling for 8.5 months. This was an idea I've thought of since 2011. However, I had every excuse not to travel due to other priorities (school, money, work, job, etc) but looking back, I can say proudly that I don't regret the sacrifices I've made to fulfill this dream. I feel I was destined to do this.

For 254 days, I visited 20 countries in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East! This trip defined my life and I hope these travels inspire others to travel and live life! It all started on Sunday, November 3, 2013 when I hopped on a plane from Toronto Pearson International Airport and to London Heathrow.
