About Me
2017 EDIT: Apparently I just can't stay away from Alaska! In the last year, I've travelled about a bit (spending a few months in New Orleans), before landing back in AK for another beautiful--though super wet-- summer season. It's now time to flee south for the winter and begin the next adventure.
This year will be roaming the lower 48 for a bit with my boyfriend (https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/wolfshull) and his lovable service dog before heading out to live in Japan for a few months. It'll be a hugely different world, but I'm so excited to be running towards it.
2016 EDIT: Everything below is still pretty true. Though now my adventure has extended-- I ended up back in Alaska this past season (Juneau, this time), and I have someone with me as well! The route is different, but the person is the same, with a few extra miles!
I'm 26 years old and on a bit of a walk-about. I've been volunteering in SE Alaska for the last few months, and before that I was a cake decorator for a few years. Prior to that it was NOLA, which was probably the most interesting place I've lived!
I truly love meeting new people and going new places, as cliche as that sounds, which is part of the reason I abandoned my job to adventure for a while. I tend to be cheerful, and try to make the best of most situations. Just so long as it's an adventure!
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
My contract is up, and it's time to start the next adventure. I'm meandering my way back east by way of boat, plane, train, and automobile, and quite a few miles by foot.
There are a few places that I'm walking into blind, so I'm trying to find someone to stay with that could, at the very least, put us up on a couch (or floor or something!), and would, at the very most, give me a taste of their town.
Aside from those things, I've found that the folks on couchsurf are typically the kindest and most interesting people you could ever meet. I'd love to get to know a few more.
Interests
My interests lie in a million different directions. I'm perfectly happy sitting on a rock in the middle of nowhere, or milling through a crowded show. I think I most enjoy the chance to learn and observe, whether it be people in a crowd or the tiniest flower in a moss mat.
Lately, I've been spending my time hiking, reading, botanizing, cooking, and (mostly) exploring.
Music, Movies, and Books
Music: I'll try just about anything. My favorites have included, in no particular order, Watsky, Hozier, Rise Against, Jodie Holland, Delta Rae, Tom Waits, the Monophonics, Brother Ali...
Movies: All time favorite is probably Requiem for a Dream. It's beautifully shot, and even though I can't stand to watch it more than once every six months or so, I enjoy it fully every time. Other than that, I tend to prefer older sci-fi and horror, anything that plays on TCM a bunch, and things that make me think.
Books: Too many to count. Recent favorites have been The Razor's Edge and Of Human Bondage, both by M. Somerset Maugham. Marquez and Neruda have always been favorites, as have Hugo, Dickens, and Camus. I'll generally pick anything up on a whim, and keep reading so long as it interests me.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Honestly, the thing I'm most proud of right now is dropping everything and going.
I had to leave most things behind and make a leap into a new place, a new job, no income, and no real support system to take this adventure. I've wanted to for ages, and didn't think I could. Now that I have... I can't believe I waited.
Teach, Learn, Share
I've spent the last few months learning about Southeast Alaska, especially the flora and fauna of Baranof Island. I was a cake decorator for a number of years. I'm versed in various literary and theatrical arenas. I love sharing all of these things, and anything else I know. I'm also a decent trivia player, if that comes in handy :)
I like to learn anything new, whether it's a card game, a drink trick, or a shortcut!
What I Can Share with Hosts
Anything I've got. I'm travelling pretty light (just my pack and me!), but I'm more that happy to grab some beer or make dinner :)
