About Me

My name is Xavier and I am almost 25 (late September) and I just moved up to Indianapolis from Miami. After graduating from my university in May of 2017 I decided to do a year long volunteer program with AmeriCorps & FEMA where I was put on a 8 person team of people from across the country. I was lucky enough to be able to offer my skills and shoulder to survivors in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico over that year time. I love volunteering, helping others, and making a positive impact anywhere I can. I now work for the Defense Contract Audit Agency and ensure that the U.S. taxpayers and war fighters are receiving the best deals to help our country in a more indirect way.

My biggest hobby is currently running and I love traveling and being able to enjoy the sights while also getting a nice workout in! Next would be making and hanging out with friends (I have 9 best friends) and documenting it all through pictures (take a lot of pictures). I also love playing cards, music of all kinds (been to over 10 different music festivals), playing and watching sports (baseball, basketball, and football (doing 6 fantasy teams this year)) as well as just hanging out (100% extroverted). I truly enjoy meeting new people, good conversation (love finances), and exploring.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I never left my state until I graduated college at the age of 23. I worked 3 jobs as I did not receive financial aid to put myself through college and support myself and my mother. As a volunteer going through numerous disasters I averaged 55 hours a week of work for a year put me back financially (volunteer pay was $158.22 bi-weekly). I am working hard to pay off all my student loan debt, live in a new city (Indianapolis), and send money back home to Miami. That means that my funds to travel are limited. To me the most ironic fact of traveling is as a volunteer I had stayed in interesting housing from responder camps with the Army to a WW2 Battleship to YMCA camps. Now, I look at prices of hotels and even hostels and I struggle to decide how many nights I can really afford without breaking my budget even though I think every city and town has their own unique attractions to offer. I hope to see every nook and cranny and being able to utilize any and all resource such as Couchsurfing I hope to be able to.

Thanks for reading :)

Music, Movies, and Books

Some of my favorite artists (seen all listed live): Red Hot Chili Peppers, Childish Gambino, Above & Beyond, Lana Del Ray, Arctic Monkeys, Kanye, Billy Joel, Cage the Elephant, Kaskade, Elton John.

Movies: Literally anything, even the bad ones but my tops are The Big Short, Moneyball, The Social Network, Fight Club, American Beauty, 40 Year Old Virgin, Talladega Nights, Star Wars + Superhero Movies.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My most impactful deed for a survivor was helping an elderly woman in Texas who lost her whole roof. The area had no cell reception or internet service and stayed with her for about 3 hours as I explained FEMA, Red Cross, and local community organizations slowly and repeatedly to ensure she knew what she was eligible for. I organized a ride for her to the closest shelter and gave her my number in case she had any questions. She did but was happy to help.

My most impactful deed for a friend was one of my best friends best friends who I did not know too well ended up homeless. I invited him to stay with me on my couch and it ended up being easier for him to just stay in my room, we shared a bed, bathroom, and eventually cooked all our meals together. Opening your door to others especially those in need helps not only those who need a helping hand but yourself grow and learn. I gained a new best friend from the experience.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am a small business owner, I tutor all ages in multiple subjects and my specialty is business specifically accounting and credit.

I love learning, I take a multitude of online classes for free and take advantage of any training videos I can find. I love game show knowledge so anything is useful to me.

I am an open book, I love talking and sharing so ask me a question!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Mostly just my positive attitude! I always believe in the best of people as a volunteer during the 2017 hurricane season it only strengthened my resolve that is true. I love sporting events, museums, and hiking the great outdoors! I have ENDLESS stories about anything from my time of being on a team that entailed working, living, and eating with the same people I never met before for a whole year to survivor stories. I have too much knowledge of credit, credit cards, and overall financial information so if you're looking for any practical advice I am an accountant. Overall I hope to just bring good conversation and positive memories!
