About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Be daring! Learn Mandarin.

ABOUT ME

I have finally been released into the world after too much time in university, and am excited to return to the best schooling system I know: travelling!

I am currently working on fusing art and activism, environmental justice and anti-oppression. I've recently fallen in love with writing and performing spoken word poetry. I am obsessed with all things related to food! Eating food, cooking food growing food, community gardens, researching food security....

I love long journeys and slow journeys. I love the travelling part of travelling. The bus rides, train rides, road trips, bike trips, slow saunters along side streets.

PHILOSOPHY

To live creatively, critically, courageously, and to always keep curiosity, humour and imagination close at hand.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am travelling now, and I would love to share stories and conversation with any couchsurfers.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I had two wonderful couchsurfing experiences in Taiwan--in Hualien and Taitung, and am excited to try again, and also to host others! I have stayed on couches, spare bedrooms, floors, shared beds, of friends and family all over the place. My most recent sleeping on a non-bed expereince was a train trip I did from Toronto to Edmonton. 2 and a half days through the gorgeous Canadian Shield and prairies. I've also slept in a sleeping bag on a plastic reclining chair on the top deck of a ferry from Prince Rupert, BC to Skagway, Alaska.

Interests

Being outside. Eating mangoes and avocados. Biking. Cooking. Planting vegetable gardens. Writing. Making music. Languages. Exploring the roads less traveled. Long late night conversations over a warm mug of tea. The world. Cooking.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music I've been listening to of late: Herbie Hancock, K'Naan, the Good Lovelies, the Rural Alberta Advantage, Rae Spoon, the Buena Vista Social Club, Amadou and Miriam, Nina Simone...

Books just read: Factory Girls, by Leslie Chang, Sula, by Toni Morrison. The Truth About Stories, by Thomas King. Is a Door, by Fred Wah.

Movies...just saw Mary and Max, a fantastic claymation film. I love animated films! I have a strange fondness for Bollywood, but can never find friends who want to watch with me.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I participated in my very first vegetable garden growing adventure this summer, and one day lifted the leaves on our zuchhini plants to find two huge zucchinis! Forgive me for sounding naive, but there is nothing more miraculous and revolutionary to me than eating food that grew from a seed planted months ago!

Teach, Learn, Share

A recipe to cure sweaty armpits, which my mom just translated for me, from the Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica) the most complete and comprehensive medical book ever written in the history of traditional Chinese medicine:

take lychee nuts, roast them, grind them into a paste with rice wine, apply to armpits, y voila!

Countries I’ve Visited

Countries I’ve Lived In
