I am currently studying Arabic in Aleppo. Generally speaking, I have been described as a terrorist, a red, white and blue-blooded gringito, and everything in between. Arab and European descent, born in the U.S. Too liberal for my own good.

Purchasing bread in Aleppo is probably the most dangerous activity I've taken part in. It is a complete free for all right outside the bakery. Women, children, men, it doesn't matter; one wrong step and you will be utterly trampled. Bread is the bread of life here. And a reason to forget one's dignity.
