One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sitting on the ridge of Mt. Pilatus in switzerland was the first time I had been at the top of such a high peak. I could see straight down to the valleys on either side - no ridges fell away, it was just steep mountainside ALL the way down. I was awestruck and for the first time understood why people love mountains with such passion. I have hiked to many peaks since then but there's so much more!!

I lived for 6 months in the Dorm City in Damascus, Syria while I studied at the university. I still think of my time there as one of the favorite times of my life. I wandered through a new area of the city almost everyday. A city of 4 million never seems to end. There are endless public transit routes and I tried to take a new one to the end of the line whenever I could. I ended up with stories of (very serious!) marriage proposals to crossing borders by accident to ending up in the middle of residential areas that looked like I had time-traveled to the wealthiest of old tsarist Russia...

I saw a country freed of it's invaders... On a day I will never forget, we woke up to hear the news that they had pulled out of southern Lebanon. There was dancing in the streets and people singing and hanging out of car windows as the parades began. We drove with everyone else through a part of the country none of us had set foot in for 20 years - longer than I'd been alive at that point. It's incredible to celebrate something so monumental to your country's identity...
