ABOUT ME

I'm a Brooklyn exile who moved to the Netherlands to study in 2007, and never left. I write and do research both for fun and profit. I'm curious about the planet and I like to learn about its nature and culture, its overlooked spots and its obvious ones. I try to live as self-sufficiently as an urban renter can, at least until the day I move to a homestead in the countryside. I really like to cook (and can cook for all sorts of special diets).

I've hosted couchsurfers here in Leiden and in Berlin - and surfed a few couches in Ireland, Poland, Norway, Denmark, Austria and Germany.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Animation, auteurs, documentary film.
Music: Rock and blues, opera.
Books: Classic novels, creative nonfiction, poetry.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Downtown Rome, Italy after the Azzurri took the World Cup. Not only was it incredible simply to watch the televised match on-screen at the Circo Massimo, where the ancients watched their chariot races ... but the chaos after the Italian victory meant that the Trevi Fountain was at last open to swimmers. :-)

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you some recipes, or how to read Sanskrit. I'd like to learn any new DIY skills, play the classical harp, or practice my (very bad) Tamil. But most of all, I like to learn to cook dishes from other people's cuisines.
