ABOUT ME

So, I graduated from university with a degree in Psychology and Anthropology in May, and--unsurprisingly-- I rue the idea of entering mainstream "adult" society one second sooner than I must. While I plan on settling into routine and graduate school this time next year, I find myself filled with a sense of wanderlust. This urge to travel permeates every fiber of my being, so--for my mental health--I succumb. I spent the first half of the summer in Costa Rica and am now about to embark ona sojourn West (with a capital 'w' of course). I am riding across the country with some friends who are going to Burning Man. We part ways in Salt Lake City, and then I an on finding my way through Northern California (specifically I'd like to spend some time in the Bay area), Oregon (Portlandish), Washington (Pullman and Seattle). This trip does come with side purpose of checking out my top grad school picks, and the primary purpose of working through an existential crisis: who am I; what does that mean; and how do I resolve the differences with contemporary society? Book deal pending?

I am a responsible person, though I do have a tendency to indulge in reckless and potentially dangerous activities and wandering off by myself. I grew up at a hotel in Costa Rica, so I have an excellent sense of, and respect for, personal space and boundaries when staying with other people.

PHILOSOPHY

Despite my typical upbeat glowing persona, I am terrible nihilist who has yet to come to terms with the socio-cultural realities of consumerism, individualism, and apathy--I don't push my despair on others though. My personal philosophy can best be summed up in the following Ginsberg quote: "ah, Carl, while you are not safe I am not safe, and now you're really in the total animal soup of time." I like to help people because that's all there is: other people (at least until we die).

Intereses

I am an outdoorsie person who loves camping, hiking, kayaking, botanical gardens, picnicking in the park, and the like. While I do also enjoy public transportation (excellent people watching, but I do that everywhere) I prefer to experience cities on foot. Muesems of every kind intrigue me: from science to craft to high and modern art to trees. I am an avid reader and writer. My main two current hobbies are welding and sewing, though I recently decided to pick a ten year goal/hobby of breaking the world record for continuous hula hooping (a girl can dream). I love the performing arts: going to plays, concerts, poetry readings, etc. I have been a vegan for about six and a half years with a couple of stints into vegetarianism. I like to think of my self a social activist, in that I protest with my voice and my dollar--though my nomadic tendencies hamper my ability to be active in any one organization. All in all I'm a pretty eccentric person who finds a way to enjoy just about any activity.

Okay, firstly climbing Mount Olympus was pretty amazing as was Greece in general. Second, driving on the Auto-Bahn. There is nothing that quite compares to European countrysides flying past you to inspire a sense of wonder. I saw my first giant windmill out there. And finally, the Costa Rican rainforest. I love falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean and monkeys and waking up to the same--it calms my heart.
