About Me
CURRENT MISSION
Vacilar: to wander... the act of traveling is more important than the destination.
Transformation: to improve... because I'm on Earth, and I'm not the only one.
ABOUT ME
I spent the earliest years of my life rollicking around a hay barn with the farm cats and Scottish Highlander Cattle. In High School, the small town ranch and rolling Rockies were replaced by Alaskan beaches and breathtaking bays. I've had space to live - to dance in the midnight sun, to paint by the waves, to drink tea, and give massages, to run barefooted... But I went to college and realized how much I don't know. I couldn't breath. I had to rush on. My feet and mind are antsy. There are too many people yet to watch on the street corners of the world. Too many paintings yet to do. And too many stories to be heard.
After college, I spent four years on the road. I drew portraits on the street.
But about five years ago, I decided it was time to re-engage. I made a new home in New York City. I found a Chinese landlady, and settled my backpack in a little basement room in Brooklyn. I did a three month coding intensive, and then spent two years working as an Android Developer. I worked for a well known finance company, and then a startup that flew me multiple times between New York City and Ukraine. In 2017, I quit my startup job to look for something better - technically and morally. I worked for a year on Disaster Resilience and water management projects in Dar es Salaam.
I have realized that to continue work in that context, I need to do more than write code - I need to understand the larger picture. Therefore, starting February of next year (2020), I will go to Australia to pursue a masters in Integrated Water Management.
I am one who values true experience over rumor. The world is beautiful and absurd. Who knows what next week will bring, let alone the next few years. I'm quiet at times, dreamy and dotty at others. I need my space, but without connection, life is meaningless.
Interests
To dance, to live in the moment and the beat.
To learn to jive with all parts of life... a good conversation... a hearty meal and heavy brew... the bob of weaving people on a city street... or the birds in the air... or the waves hitting a bow.
Presently, to try to grasp the mass of a city, to take up classics and Bohemia while learning how to wear a suit, and continue remembering how to carry my life around in a backpack (even if it's only for a long weekend).
I'm a tree climber, and a people watcher. I dance because in college, I had to run away from my soul. I wander because ... well... read some Steinbeck. Travel is the dream.
I work to engage. I code because real, technical skills are needed to contribute to this world, and I see technology as a potential catalyst for change.
Music, Movies, and Books
All music, live music... And books hold secrets to the world.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Spontaneous lone cliff climbing, rave dance parties in boat graveyards, hikes at three in the morning, random run-ins with people all over the world, street protests, some great hugs...
Teach, Learn, Share
I'll offer up sourdough pancakes and constantly improving bread. An out of practice painters hand. Some political critique. Some rambling philosophy.
Speak to me in Spanish if you can. Or Ukranian! My monolingualism has to go!
If you know of a small technology project I can help with while I'm in town, I will gladly offer my services if I stay long enough. I know front end web, Android, and a itzy-bitzy bit of iOS.
I have little to offer, but I will do what I can.
