It's nothing more than self-promotion, creating an image of yourself, which is closer to how you would like other people to perceive you, than how you really are. HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have been part of CS for 12 years already. I've hosted couchsurfers in Warsaw, Barcelona and Indonesia and have been hosted several times during my different trips.
