About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To explore our world and make connections. To do good deeds and make the world a better place. Like Michael Knight, but with less admirable hair.

ABOUT ME

I've been a Floridian now for 29 years, but before that I was an Army brat and moved quite often, living across the United States and in Germany for a brief period. I consider myself whimsical and good natured with a good sense of humor (my kids and wife might find that last point debatable).

I consider myself a meddling dogooder - I like to help people solve problems. My career revolves around solving communications challenges, primarily for higher education, but also for non-profits and small businesses. I love to travel, but circumstances limit my opportunities to do so, so I try and take a few days here and there whenever I can. I yearn for going back to Wyoming (the most magical state of the union I've visited), Vermont, and New Zealand.

You can find me around the social web using the name kuratowa, or at http://do-gooder.info, which links to my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and professional and personal blogs.

I am always ready for a karaoke outing.

PHILOSOPHY

Buckaroo Banzai taught me Wherever you go, there you are. Captain Kirk taught me that the phrase "Let Me Help" is more powerful than "I Love You".
That sums me up.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've stayed with just two couch surfing hosts, and had a good experience both times. I usually am couch surfing in relation to conferences I am attending or volunteering at. I find it's a much greater way to get to understand and experience a city that staying in a hotel - you get out of the touristy area and get to know people that live in the city, and that makes for a richer journey.

I've couchsurfed on a number of friend's couches over the last few years, almost exclusively in the Boston area. This year I'm spreading out more geographically into places I don't know as well.

Interests

I love to go to Karaoke. I'm into pop culture, movies and science fiction, as well as comic books. I love to play board and card games.

Music, Movies, and Books

MUSIC

My music tastes are incredibly eclectic - I love artists from many genres. Some of my favorite artists are Aerosmith, They Might Be Giants, Steve Miller, Tori Amos, Meatloaf, the Muppets, and Shania Twain. I love movie scores, and James Bond themes.

MOVIES

Flash Gordon is hands down my favorite film of all time. I also adore the original Star Wars trilogy, Star Trek, Stargate, Miyazaki films, the James Bond series, His Girl Friday, Princess Bride, Jaws, the Muppet Movie, and the Great Muppet Caper.

BOOKS

I enjoy Dostoevsky, H.P. Lovecraft, and Stephen King. I recently read Cloud Atlas and loved that.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Going to Neunschwanstein in Germany. Taking an amazing three week trip to Wyoming and South Dakota. Seeing Bill Murray in a bar and telling him to have a safe trip, and getting a salute in return.

James Bond trivia? Obscure comic book lore. Social Media dos and dont's. How not to tie knots. World's worst dance moves. Best way to dress as an over-the-hill Magnum P.I.
