À propos de moi

CURRENT MISSION

Enjoy the Summer

ABOUT ME

I am a teacher of science. Not in the sense that I go to work everyday to teach 12 year olds science, which I do do, but in the sense that I cannot help but teach science. In the classroom, on the beach, in a museum, I am compelled to explain stuff or ask questions about the things which I cannot explain. Luckily for there are many jobs available, especially in the New York City science-teacher-depleted backdrop, which makes me very happy. Teaching is the hardest and most rewarding thing I have ever done. When I have time off I like to make the most of it by traveling, so here I am.

PHILOSOPHY

I have not entirely figured out why I do it just yet, but a large part of my life involves helping other people. It makes me feel good (I know this is a reason, but I mean the deep-down reason).
The earth will end at some point, including humans, so I try to keep that in mind when making important life decisions.

Centres d'intérêt

comedy, art, science, leaves, shoes, new music, less new music, older music, why people do what they do, does dawn really travel at 1000 miles/hour, why i am still not using the metric system, the evolution of toenails, my students' entirely different yet syntactically consistent manner of speaking English, the impreciseness of everything (especially language)...

Une aventure extraordinaire que j'ai vécue

On the first day of school this year I had a student tell me she hated science. At the end of the year her group won the science fair.

Enseignez, apprenez, partagez

I had a realization about plants approximately a year ago. It has changed the way I see everything. Here is the background info (apologies if you know this already): plants take water, carbon dioxide, and light energy and turn it into oxygen and chemical potential energy (i.e. sugar and other larger molecules made of sugar subunits). The sugar and more complex molecules make up the structural components of most of the plant. Simple enough. Then one day I was staring at a giant tree, thinking about how to teach this, and it dawned on me that that ginourmous tree used to be carbon dioxide, a gas. Whenever I see a tree, or other plant, I picture it turning into carbon dioxide and I wonder how much volume it would occupy.
