About Me

Hello everyone -- My name is Kyle (aka Brotha Kale), and I hail from Eastern Wisconsin. I'm currently a student at UW-Madison studying anthropology, East Asian studies, and environmental studies. After graduation I'd love to spend some time traveling the world, thru-hiking, and maybe even sharing stories and life experiences together from the comfort of your living room.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

As of now, I am hoping to network with and learn from fellow backpackers, couchsurfers, and world travelers in order to establish a small group of mutually supportive friends and family with whom I can share my time.

Interests

Since very early in my life I have been interested in traditional Chinese and Japanese culture. From six years old until graduation, I studied Japanese in school, and it has left me wanting to spend more time in Japan practicing Japanese and growing friendships both new and old. I believe that by adopting pieces of East Asian philosophy, we can come one step closer to ending our ecological crisis.

I love to be outdoors and feeling connected with my surroundings. The strongest feelings of joy and of being at peace with myself and those around me are brought out when spending time on a nature trail. One day I hope to find the fortunate circumstances that wills one to complete a long distance hike.

I have also been playing musical instruments since an early age with the viola being my first. This later led me to teach myself acoustic, electric, and bass guitar as well as several others. Music has inevitably become a powerful vehicle for personal expression and a source of deeper creativity.

Music, Movies, and Books

My taste in music has become vast over the years. I like many artists from Coltrane and Monk to Dylan and Pink Floyd. I also dig a good jam band.

I'm behind on my movie watching, but Into The Wild and Big Fish have been longtime favorites.

I get into the classic nature writers and probably too many college textbooks for one's own good.

Teach, Learn, Share

It is always fun to share music together whether playing real instruments or just listening together.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'd be happy to cook for you (mostly vegetarian) or handle odd jobs in and around the house. Also, if you keep a garden, do all out permaculture, or something in between I'm more than willing to get my hands dirty. If you just want to have a good conversation or share stories, I'm always open for that as well.
