About Me
CURRENT MISSION
To explore the world!
ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Lance. I lived on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada for 21 years and the rest in north-central Alberta, Canada. I’m married with 4 adult children who have left the family nest and are on their own life adventures. I retired from 30 years working as a Plant Breeder for Agriculture Canada. I’m easy going, open minded, and adaptable. I love great food, fun people and exploring new cultures and habitats.
PHILOSOPHY
I believe that by being open minded, friendly and engaging then doors will open allowing you to make new friends, explore new possibilities, and embark on new adventures. If you stop learning, you stop growing. One needs to celebrate joyous occasions, smile often, be able to grieve your losses but move on. Above all, enjoy life, enjoy the simple things, take care of yourself, your loved ones, and preserve your environment.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Although I am a neophyte to ‘couchsurfing.com’ my family have certainly had occasion to host and be hosted by many others over the years. I enjoy hosting and visiting with travellers and vicariously become reacquainted with the wonders of my surroundings by showing others the highlights my part of the world has to offer.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
None yet (!) on this site but plenty of experience with crashing on friends couches over the years from British Columbia to Mexico.
Interests
I enjoy travel, reading, science, music, meeting new people, photography, hiking, talking, relaxing, swimming, volunteering (Elks, 4-H, Scouts). We live in a remarkable era where travel around the planet is possible within a few days at most. Our global village with diverse cultures, variable environments, and unique flora and fauna never ceases to intrigue me. The more one learns, the more one realizes there is so much more waiting to be discovered!

Music, Movies, and Books
Movies: Love ’em! Everything except horror (particularly the ones where you are stuck and can’t get away fast enough!)
Books: Science, science fiction, adventure, fiction, historical, biographies, mystery.
Music: Blues, jazz, pop, classical, and ethnic.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Crossing the east arm of Great Slave Lake a few years ago in a small boat at midnight in mid-summer, the water was like glass without a ripple. We were navigating by GPS and could not see a shoreline but the moonless and cloudless night sky was filled with countless stars that arched from horizon to horizon. It was the first time I ever felt like I was inside a globe. The horizons were so distant I could see the curvature of the earth. The moment was awe-inspiring and I really did feel like an incredibly insignificant yet connected speck floating in a cosmic ocean.
Teach, Learn, Share
Teach: I have a post graduate degree in genetics so I could teach plant breeding! I have some experience with photography, hunting, fishing, hiking, English as a second language, winemaking, and how to lose money on the stock market!
Learn: I would like to learn how to play basic guitar and harmonica, and anything about cooking and regional cuisine.
Share: Everyone has a life story and it is always enjoyable to discuss commonality and differences.
