About Me

I'm an old-school couch surfer, meaning; couch surfing is more than just free accomodation, so please read my profile and put some effort in your request :)! I prefer to host in the weekends.

HISTORY
(to understand the present one must learn from the past)

Growing up I always thought I knew what I wanted in life. But that 'thing' I wanted so much, changed just as frequently as the seasons change. One day I wanted to become a doctor, the next day I was going to be an actor and the day after I would become a journalist. I would dig my claws right into the current goal and do everything it took to reach that goal. I would not only become a doctor, I would become the best doctor in the world, just like I would make it to Hollywood as an actor and also be the most influential journalist EVER. These constant fluctuations of life-goals and perspectives on the future gave me the idea of certainty and safety even though it was the complete opposite of that. I graduated high school and was standing at a crossroads; but I had no idea which path to chose. I had absolutely no clue what to do or where to go. I decided to create a path of my own and I packed my bags and made a run for it. I booked a single flight to Hong Kong and just decided to go with the flow. I made my way through SE Asia in 5 months and I was absolutely hooked to the feeling traveling gave me. The uncertainty, the feeling of 'anything is possible' and no one's here to judge me for it. Asia triggered something in me. I became more curious and started to ask myself more questions. It was an explosion of new colors, stories, people, smells, foods, and landscapes. Everyday was a new chance to discover, live and learn. I got addicted to this feeling. After 5 months, I needed money. Australia would be the best and easiest way to earn money so that's where I went. Against all odds, I settled down in Sydney and build a new life for myself there. I like to think that I became an adult in my time there. At the age of 18 I was living halfway across the world. In a country where they spoke a different language, where no one knew who I was or where I came from. I had to take care of myself and I would be the only one doing that. I learned so much about others and myself. My time in Sydney definitely shaped me to the person I am today. After a year and a half in Sydney I was getting restless again. I needed a new challenge, a drastic change. I missed the uncertainty of travelling and went back to Asia. I did get what I was looking for. The thrills of travelling were back. After a few months a new itch came up; I wanted to study. I wanted to educate myself. All my friends were doing it and it felt like I was missing out on something great. I moved back to Amsterdam and enrolled in a psychology degree, not in Amsterdam, that would be too easy. I went to the picturesque village of Ghent, Belgium

PRESENT
(The daily life)

Right now I'm in my third year of my bachelor in psychology. The decision to study was definitely a good one. It changed my perspective on the world. I look more critically at the challenges I face today and I have a more mature and realistic vision on the world than I had when I was travelling. Being a student gave me a lot of new opportunities to grow as a person. By taking up as much extra-curricular activities as possible, I like to believe that my time here in Ghent is just as precious as my time abroad was. I try to constantly challenge myself by doing more. I'm working on a travel-blog, I'm learning a new language, I have two jobs, I'm doing voluntary work, I became a video-editor and I'm still trying to travel as much as I can. I try to keep things excited and travel at least once a month. It's hard for me to sit still and I try to be as productive as I can every single day. Life is good so far, but I've been in Ghent for over a year now and I'm getting restless again. I feel like I'm stuck here and I need to get out. Breaking free is a bit hard when you still have 2 years of studying ahead of you, so I try to be patient and sit this one out. (Start your couch request with 'wickedtravelblog = awesome' just so I know you read my entire profile).

FUTURE
(The scary one)

I like to live in the moment and not think that much of the future. I mean I don't even know what I'm having for dinner tonight, so how would I know what I want in life? I'm probably not going to make use of my degree, but I'm OK with that. I'm basically back where I started: The guy who has all these ideas but nothing to commit to. For now I just want to keep challenging myself and keep learning. Not necessarily from books though. I believe you can learn something everyday if you have an open vision and are not scared of the unknown. I would like to inspire people in a way. I don't know how yet but I'm working on it.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I still travel a lot and when I travel I prefer to stay with locals anytime over staying in some soul-less, cold hotel. Hostels are also fun but I prefer locals. I also host people in Belgium when I have the time. I always enjoy my time with couchsurfers and love to spend time with people from other countries in general. There's so much to learn from each other and that's why I love this concept.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've had my fair share of couch surfing already. I hosted some people and I surfed with some. Couch surfing has always been one of the best parts of my travels. I love how close you can get to someone, simply by staying in their house for a few nights. Couch surfing offers me the ultimate freedom when I travel and It's great to know people from all over the world. I'm actually still in touch with some of the people I surfed with and I definitely made friends for life through this community. It's been great so far and I've never had any bad experiences.
