ABOUT ME
A brief run down:- Up until I went overseas I worked in a South Australian university as a tutor and research assistant while studying toward my PhD, but never woke up excited and glad to be going off to work - quite the opposite!! Then my mum and a close friend were both diagnosed with cancer and (as cliched as it sounds) these events made me REALLY conscious and awake to the truth that life is here to be lived and not to slog away day after day at something that you don't truly love! So I packed in my blossoming academic career and went traveling and along the way realised that I needed to get back in touch seriously with the arts, and in that funny way the universe has, when I got home I was offered a job managing a couple of theatres and project managing at a larger concert venue (my favourite venue in my city no less!), so now I am immersed everyday in music and theatre! Amazing.
I love music. I love BIG LAUGHS and I love people who really love a laugh too! I love theatre, movies, art (would like more time to pursue this in the future, sculpture and painting specifically) interesting chats, having a beer at the pub, riding my horses, trying to play the guitar (very badly at this stage!), dancing, exploring, bushwalking, citywalking, finding out about the world, others and myself.
I'm a big believer in socialist values, and I wish individuals and businesses would remember that we are (in the recent words of Ben Lee) all in this together, so it doesn't do to impact others negatively - I really REALLY love people who ascribe to the 'commit random acts of kindness and senseless beauty' doctrine!! Especially people who are kind to others with an almost childlike disregard for whether they are going to look like a dork for it or not. (I'm lucky to be surrounded by lots of these types!)
I'll add to this as I think of important things...
PHILOSOPHY
"Feel the fear and do it anyway" I'm really believe this is essential in order to have a full life.. I am essentially a big scaredy cat, so I need to push myself out of my comfort zone a lot!!
Plus I just saw 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' today and there is a beautiful little speech toward the end (written on a postcard from Benjamin to his daughter):
"For what it’s worth, it’s never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit... start whenever you want... you can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that stop you. I hope you feel things that you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life that you’re proud of and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again."
-F. Scott Fitzgerald.
(I love F. Scott Fitzgerald..)

Music, Movies, and Books
Some favourites movies are Harold & Maude, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Wings of Desire, Benny & Joon, Eagle vs Shark,
Comedy I like - I love the Mighty Boosh, Monty Python, Flight of the Conchords, and Margaret Cho. I love Nevermind the Buzzcocks, and I think Simon Amstell is really funny, I love Black Books and Greenwing, too many really! I'm not into sexist or racist humour (although I am a little bit ashamed to admit that I DO find some of Russell Brand's stuff REALLY REALLY hysterical, when he's not being so damn sexist, I wish he'd read some feminist theory) and I hate humour that makes fun of people who are disadvantaged in some way, I LOVE Eddie Izzard's stand up stuff (and he was perfect as Mr Kite!)
Music - I love lots of old stuff (eg Velvet Underground, Beatles)and alternative music, electronica (esp the older stuff like Gary Numan and various cheesy 80's bands, anyone remember Visage?), indie music from the 90's (Ride, Blur, Stone Roses, The Sundays, etc), kooky old-fashioned stuff like Squirrel Nut Zippers, but at the moment I have been listening to Amy Winehouse (someone save the poor girl from herself!). Motown, great soul.. anything really as long as its not heavy metal or bad chart-topping stuff with no soul... Great funk that makes your body groove involuntarily almost...There are too many favourites to list here! You get the gist though..
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I think the most amazing thing I've ever done is what I am doing right now. I have left the security and certainty of my post graduate career path (which I have been working toward for ten years) and sold/given away nearly everything I own and to embark on an unknown adventure where nothing is certain except that I was not happy before so I am taking steps toward finding what that is for me, and who knows? I may even find it!! I'm expecting I will actually!! :)
Teach, Learn, Share
I can open your eyes to a new way of looking at the world as I have been a sociology tutor for five years, want to know about Marx or Marcuse? Want to know why we think about gender the way we do, or what role the media plays in modern western societies? Want some differnt ways of understanding the world around you? Just ask me!! Talking about sociology and analyzing modern society in the pub with a beer is a great way to spend time. I have also done a bit of belly dancing in my time, and can teach you enough of this that you could do it very convincingly! I also know a little bit about diet and meditation in order to help your body fight off cancer.
