Overview
About Me
I'm originally from Los Angeles, and currently living in Portland, OR, where I work for the regional government as the communications lead on housing and homelessness work. I recently completed my doctorate in urban studies so obviously I enjoy learning about cities, and I also have a background in photography and film. In addition to those things, I'm super interested in anthropology, archaeology, sociology, politics, art, architecture, religion, and general adventuring.
For me, travel is an essential part of life. Pre-pandemic I tried to leave the US at least once each year, and wherever I go, I try to make a full investigation out of it. I find the best discoveries usually happen by accident and are not in guidebooks. I especially enjoy any kind of festival, gathering or live performance, but am equally happy with a long ramble.
Here's my portfolio page if you want to get a sense of what I'm into; www.laureneverett.com.
There's nothing I love more than a festival, road trip, ruin, or live music when traveling (or at home, for that matter), so please show me these things!! I'm also delighted to walk for hours and discover neighborhoods, parks and just daily life in a new place
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
After surfing and hosting over the past several years and meeting many amazing people from all over the world (and a few questionable folks too), I've decided there's just no better way to get to know a place! Like many people in CS, I'm not so much into the tourist stuff as I am into learning about what life is really like where you live. I want to meet your friends, and hang out at your favorite secret spots!

Mainly non-fiction these days because school, but also, reality really is more entertaining and wild! I'm especially interesting in anything relating to culture and religion: basically anything in the anthropology section.
Soul, classic 90s grunge and indie, 50s RnB, dub and reggae, early jazz and anything New Orleans or early Americana, golden age country, calypso, girl groups from the 50s and 60s, cumbia, Ethiopian jazz, son jarocho, 70s synth symphonies, Vangelis, and so much more!
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
The sunrise over the Ionian Sea after a hallucination-inspiring 16 hour ferry ride from Brindisi to Patras.
Teach, Learn, Share
I know a lot about Los Angeles if anyone's planning to visit or just curious. I can do some deep nerding out about urban planning/theory/history. Also, depression-era outlaws, Santeria, how to make the perfect Texas queso dip, piano-playing, photo-taking, early American spiritualism, silent film stars, conspiracy theories and other miscellanea....
