About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To travel round the world, (UPDATE March 2011: I've just completed this!) and write one book-to leave something to posterity, a sign that I have once lived on this Earth.

ABOUT ME

OK, I'm 37 yrs old now (turned that on the last day of August, 31st), and am doing what I like. I have completed my PhD in History in 2010, after having graduated in 2002 (M.A. in Norwegian language and Political Science). I've been doing a research on the relationship between Norway and the European Union, and have written my dissertation about this issue. I occasionally taught a few courses at my university, but mainly I am working as a film translator, as one still has to pay the bills. And yes, I'm a travel addict. Really, apart from books I spend all my available money on travelling. No luxuries, no wife. I don't even smoke - which saves a lot of money..

PHILOSOPHY

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I... I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference"
(that's by Robert Frost, not me, but still quite characteristic of me)

And another one, by C.S. Lewis:

"Experience is a brutal teacher, but you learn. My God, do you learn..."

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Surfed couches in Norway, Israel, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Serbia, Macedonia, Belgium, Latvia, Macau, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and some other places, have hosted people from Australia, Ireland, France, Norway, Brazil, Serbia, Singapore, Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, the UK, the US, Germany, Slovenia, Canada, New Zealand and other countries...and also had the experience of meeting other surfers at mutual hosts' places!
Great way of getting new acquaintances, and it's just fantastic, that -though I have now been to many places and got to know lots of different types of people and cultures- each new acquaintance and adventure unveils a new and unknown layer of the world and humankind. I can never get bored... :)

So, if I wasn't clean-cut :))).. this is GREAT!

Interests

First, and foremost, I'm a travel addict. And a book addict (mostly history and travelogues). Spending more time with my little nephews is a priority, and watching them growing up (the older, Áron is now 5 yrs old, and incredibly he shares his birthday with his mother :) - the younger, Dávid is 2.5 yrs old, but is already the biggest little rascal in the world!! :))

By travelling around the globe I'm always in search of new ideas and cultures, that's what keeps me going. I feel that I'm looking for something that is a bit vague to me as well, but never mind - looking for it (whatever "it" might be) while travelling is the greatest experience!

Music, Movies, and Books

Books? I have almost 5000 pieces, so it's hard to tell. OK: "Nothing Venture, nothing win", from Edmund Hillary is one of the best. Also "The Count of Monte Cristo", for example - but these really are just random examples. Travelogues and 20th century history are always welcome by me...
And I'm a Verne fan since having read "The Mysterious Island" at the age of 9...

Music: Beatles, sometimes medieval Hungarian Gregorian music. I'm not a big music consumer, but for example I like the likes of Manu Chao, and Ace of Base also...yeah, and not to mention the sweetest voice you'd ever hear: Márta Sebestyén singing Hungarian folk songs!

Movies? Easily the best one I've ever seen is "Sunshine", from István Szabó. Very touching.
My great favourites are the Monty Python movies, especially "Life of Brian", and John Cleese's "Fawlty Towers"-series. Others: Dead Poets' Society, Bud Spencer-Terence Hill movies, Hotel Rwanda, Remains of the Day, Michael Collins, 1492-Conquest of Paradise, A Few Good Men, Ben-Hur, Good Morning Vietnam..and many more

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Well, the most outstanding, peculiar, and memorable is surely the trip to North Korea in 2002! A time travel back to the 1950's. I can hardly think of anything that tops this in weirdness...
OK, once I also had the opportunity to speak about 3 sentences with the King of Norway, but still, the North Korea experience is nr 1!
