About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I want to see more of America before leaving this country for a while. I've never been further east than Montana so I'm hoping to check out the east coast, then i'm headed to Ecuador to work as an intern for the fall

ABOUT ME

I'm Leo, I've grown up in Alaska and though every Alaskan can't wait to get out of this state I really do love it. I love backpacking and biking and seeing new things, something Alaska never lacks. I just finished my third year studying Biology at the University of Alaska Anchorage and I'll be heading to Ecuador at the end of September to spend the fall working as an intern in a hospital in Quito.

I'm hoping to make something of a gap year out of it, hop a ferry to Bellingham, bike and couchsurf over to the east coast, get a better impression of this country and eventually meet up with my sister in Virginia. Then I'll be road tripping with my dad back to Texas where my family lives before taking a plane to the equator. After the internship I'll see where things are at, hopefully spend some time around central america before making it back North. So long as I find a way to have an adventure and miss an Alaskan winter I'm happy :P

If you're anywhere along the way I'd love to meet up. I love new people and new things. And if you're headed east and looking for a travelling companion, I'll have plenty of munchies to split.

PHILOSOPHY

I think this world is something of it's own paradox, as true or important as anything may be it is usually the opposite from another perspective. I try to form my own opinions but always stay open to them being wrong. love, peace, passion, and fuck what else.

Music, Movies, and Books

Oh man anything by Ursula Lequin i love: 'the left hand of darkness' and the Earthsea trilogy are some of my favorites. The forever war is pretty fantastic too. I've got a lot of love for Sublime and any hiphop with a good flow: nas, kwali, immortal technique, DJ Shadow... I also really like jack johnson and citizen cope. As far as movies: Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski, the fifth element, Dogma, Orgazmo, are some of my favorites.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I spent my 20th birthday with my dad in the middle of Texas, hiking around Guadalupe national park. It being march in texas we'd expected camping to be a peace of cake so i brought my lightest bag, a hammock (my first construction which ended up being awful), and a tarp. weelll it ended up being in the teens all night and camping on the saddle before the summit of guadalupe peak the wind was ripping. After turning 20 and spending 10 hours borderline hypothermic i'll never forget that sunrise. The mountain we were on was about the only dollop on the flat stretch of land so you could practically see the curve of the earth from where we were it was so flat. The sun broke the horizon and spilled a purple haze our direction. within a couple hours we were warming back up, but just for that moment that the sun broke it was an incredible sight of hope and relief, one thing i won't forget.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love the idea of couchsurfing being a way for people to meet and learn and bounce ideas and inspirations. I can teach you how to make a hammock out of a bundle of rope or how to make a pair of sandals out of an old tire (bike tires work best). I can tune up a bike pretty well and get a wheel true enough to ride. I love talking and thinking with people and I've got a good bit of random information you're welcome to pick. Life's an adventure.
