I've been using Couchsurfing multiple times while living in the US. I had unbelievable experiences and met some of my best friends in LA.

When traveling I think there is no better way to get to know the country and its culture, when I'm home (given that we're on the same page), I think that's a pretty good way to create long standing friendships.
