About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Exploring the Pacific Northwest in our new-to-us-old-to-the-world 1983 Winnebago.

ABOUT US

We are the kind of couple that walks into an unfamiliar dive bar in a town where we don't know anybody, and by the end of the night are on first-name-basis with everybody in the place. We like people, we live to travel, and we love making new friends.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Most of my experience couchsurfing occurred before this website was even invented. I've done a lot of hitchhiking all over the planet, and stayed with a lot of incredible strangers along the way.

A few years ago, when I first set up this account, I had a few people stay with me from this website. I also stayed with one person from here when I was traveling through Utah alone on my motorcycle three years ago. All were pleasant experiences.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Once I was hitchhiking along a long and dusty road in southern Germany, en route to a concert in Barcelona, when the truck driver pulled over and informed me that his path would no longer coincide with my southerly plans. I thanked the man and stepped out of the mighty vessel into a miserable wet night at an unknown crossroads. The air was heavy with that european rain that squishes through the black gumdrop sky and whispers in your icicle ears "you should have bought a train ticket, you cheap bastard."

I held out my soaked cardboard sign in a half-assed Custer's Last Stand (feeling considerably more Wounded Knee), and was just about to give up and pitch my miserable $20 duct-taped tent in some sad field when the most unlikely of angels drew his tiny late 80's Fiat to a stop at my heels, rolled down the window, and said: "Dacht humbestraught geschliectenbilt shlaffenheimer"

or at least, that's what it sounded like to me. I had only been on the road for about a year at that time, and "my" German was still in escrow. When prompted for an English translation, however, this gentle man replied: "you can have a bed tonight if you want."

Well, hot-damn did I ever WANT!

So this kind gentleman, a narrow, lanky, bespectacled and rather dorky looking man about whom one nearly cannot help but imagine at a computer in a cubicle — certainly NOT the type I was expecting on the side of the road — took me to his home where he lived with his father, gave me my own room with a BED! and in the morning made me breakfast and drove me 20 minutes out of his way to a more populated freeway onramp heading right in my direction.

I was a teenager then, in the years that followed I have amassed many similar stories and I think I shall never repay my social debt...but I am here to try.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I sailed a small boat 2200 miles from Long Beach, CA to Hilo, Hawaii. It took 21 frightful days and scared the shit out of me and I can't wait to do it again someday.

When I was 19 years old, I was detained by the Pakistani Intelligence Agency for trying to sneak into Afghanistan through the tribal area known as the Southwest Frontier Province.

I rode my bicycle from Olympia, Washington down the coast to San Diego.

I've sailed on ships all over the world: Alaska, Washington, California, Mexico, Hawai'i, Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Japan, Philippines, Guam, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain...

I like to travel.
