ABOUT ME

Matt & Lily are married, with two boys aged 5 and 8. We both love history, music, art, culture, good books, good food and beer.

We are pretty easy-going, but also honest, hardworking, and passionate about the things that matter to us, like our families, friends, education, and our communities. We believe it is important to give what we can to those with less, whether it be our time, our resources, or our money.

Traveled a fair amount together before children, and are now resuming travel abroad -- bit by bit. Last summer, we finally visited the Low Countries (Belgium & the Netherlands). Lily will be in the UK this summer (Cambridge and London) at a seminar. We enjoy meeting new people and learning about new cultures, first-hand, if possible! :) We hope our boys will share our excitement and curiosity. As teachers, we feel the classroom extends far beyond the walls of the school building.

Meeting new people, visiting new places, getting lost in museums, tasting the local, native foods, walking for hours through new, foreign cities . . . now that's living!

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Much enjoy meeting people from other cultures, and sharing in the cultural exchange. I feel these experiences make us more mutually knowledgeable and well-rounded people. (Saw this somewhere and had to borrow it.:)

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Our first experience was in Belgium last summer, and it was great. Met two incredible people who kindly showed us around their city. Hope there will be many more experiences like that!!!

Intereses

Biking, hockey, street fairs, learning, politics, art/music, meeting new people, baking (cakes, pies, cookies), walking around cities/getting lost, running.

Books -- Too many, though 'Shadow of the Wind' (Zafon) is a recent favorite.

Movies -- Amelie, A Very Long Engagement (love Audrey Tatou), My Life as a Dog, Pride & Prejudice, Young Victoria, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (most recent good, but very intense movie)

Lily completed 1st marathon last year, with several students from school. Currently, training for 2nd marathon with the same school team, Dreamfar.

Amazing and sad sailing along the Yangtze the last year before the Three Gorges Dam was to divert the river, especially the water markers showing where the flood waters would reach, destroying whole villages/towns as a result.

Witnessing our friends 'making it official' in one of Massachusetts' first, same-sex marriages. . . that it is STILL legal in this state, and also recognized in at least three other states.

It's so important to be true and honest to yourself, and to be comfortable in one's own skin. That also means surrounding ourselves with people who make us happy and better for knowing them. And that we can do the same for them. Life is just too short for mediocrity.
