About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I aim to centre my life around love and laughter, spending as much time as possible with friends and family, dancing, running, writing, laughing and learning. This means a little thinking outside the box as far as work is concerned; luckily I'm good at that.

ABOUT ME

We are really goofy, easy-going people. We generally just love the simple things in life (fresh, simple food; laughing a lot; dancing; spending time together as a family and with friends) and we also love to learn.

PHILOSOPHY

I lost a number of people close to me when I was quite young, and the positive effect of that was that I learned very early to live each day fully, appreciate what we have, and show our love for others every day. Because of this I have little concern for money (I should maybe have more concern!), and far more for little things like snuggling my family and friends, laughing as much as possible, loving my job, immersing myself in nature, caring for my mind and body, making and eating delicious food, drinking wine, dancing and trying to volunteer or give service to others whenever possible.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Right now I would love to give couch surfing a shot. I look forward to meeting people!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

We are just getting started with couch surfing! We have a very close friend who has been couch surfing for a few years and made tons of good friends this way - she has inspired us to give it a shot! Hopefully in the future we can also host.

Interests

Sustainability, music and movies (not mainstream... more from an art perspective), the end of the world, current events/politics, paradigm shifts, permaculture, homeschooling.

Music, Movies, and Books

We love movies! My one partner is a sound recordist for film and TV; film is a shared passion of ours. We watch movies of all sorts (well... I have limits. Hollywood action flicks, for instance.), but I do have favourites. My favourite directors are Tom Tykwer, Michael Winterbottom, Wes Anderson, Christopher Guest and Alfred Hitchcock. My favourite movies are The Shining, Amelie and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I love cheesy 80s movies, creepy psychological horrors, nicely-shot coming of age films and thought-provoking documentaries.

My musical tastes span basically all genres but I don't love everything. What I do love: Animal Collective, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, the Mountain Goats, Owen Pallett/Final Fantasy, Rae Spoon, ALT-J, Bastille, Arcade Fire, the Clash, Cat Power, Joy Division, MIA, Jay Z, Depeche Mode, the Cure, The National, Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens, Neko Case, the Decemberists, the B-52s and the Beach Boys.

I love Margaret Atwood short stories, Jeffery Eugenides, Douglas Coupland, Will Ferguson and David Sedaris. I went through a long phase where all I read was non-fiction about the apocalypse and permaculture (or the anti-apocalypse as I like to think of it), that was fun. Developed a love for James Howard Kunstler. I'm on a mission right now to read what I think of as the modern classics - so far this has included The Old Man and the Sea, The Great Gatsby, Slaughterhouse Five and The Catcher in The Rye in the past couple of years.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I struggle to determine what one might consider amazing. I see and do amazing things on such a regular basis, but I consider things like eating "special" chocolate truffles at a Sigur Ros concert in the rain, or standing a few feet from a doe and her fawn on a trail run through the woods at sunset, or holding a brand new baby to be completely amazing. There are also accomplishments, like opening and running a successful retail business for five years.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know a fair bit about unschooling a child, and if/how that works.
I do a ton of canning and preserving. I am always happy to share that knowledge.
I can teach you and your friends how to properly wear your baby or child in almost any type of carrier. Or how to improvise a carrier from household items.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm happy to bring maple syrup and/or snacks that are only available in Canada. :)
