About Me

Hey, I'm Lion. I'm 28 years old and officially still a medicine student in Vienna. Very little is missing for me to finish my studies though and I already accepted a placement as an assistant physician in a small hospital in the south-east of Berlin.

Now I'm planning my move there and for the purpose of finding a flat I'm looking for someone to host me for a few days, so I can go and see some (and probably despair at the sight of hundreds of other visitors). I thought couchsurfing would be a good way to also get to know some people in Berlin or at least get a better idea about how it will be like living there.

Generally I would describe myself as an open-minded person with strong opinions. I want everyone to be able to live their lives the way they want but I may still disapprove of their choices.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I registered here several years ago since I liked the idea of hosting people from around the world. Unfortunately I only ever got to do so once since my flatmates were as enthusiastic about strangers coming into our flat as I was. I have stayed on several couches throughout my life but those were mostly owned by friends or acquaintances. As I'm about to move to Berlin later this year I thought it would be a nice idea to come back to couchsurfing as a means to meet people there and get a better idea about the city.

Interests

If I'm completely honest I have to admit to staying on the computer quite a bit during the day. I picked up programming a couple of years ago and somehow started programming stuff just for the fun of it. Unfortunately, without proper training I waste a lot of time during with trial and error solutions.

Apart from that I like caring for my many indoor plants. One day I hope to have a garden where I can fulfill all my gardening dreams.

My biggest passion however is cooking. I really like good food and since I can't afford to go out eating all the time and since I'm a DIY person I cook a lot and try out new things.

Music, Movies, and Books

I don't read a lot of books but when I do I like to fill on the gaps in my education by reading German classics.

It's hard for me to name one particular genre of music. I listen to everything from rock to world music to pop to fringe cases of hip hop. Usually I get complaints whenever I am in control of the music, so I probably have a bad or unusual taste. Totally non-exhaustive list of music I like: queen, nuova compagnia del canto popolare, franco battiato, jethro tull, abba, enya, adiemus, lady gaga, simian, yann tiersen, spaccanapoli, pink floyd, banco del mutuo soccorso, loituma, doubtboy and tightill, nimmerselich, falco, fleet foxes, fleetwood mac, lindsey buckingham, ...

Smartphones unfortunately destroyed my ability to watch any movies or TV shows from beginning to end but I enjoy going to the cinema every once in a while. Then I'm open to both art house and super hero movies. I'm not a big fan of plain horror movies or comedies. Non-exhaustive list of movies off the top of my head which I enjoyed watching: call me by your name, tinker tailor soldier spy, spirited away, nausicaa, crouching tiger hidden spy, harold and maude, indien, the last emperor, sorry angel, brokeback mountain, the fifth element, leon the professional ...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Once, on a bicycle tour with two friends we ended up at the shore of the Baltic sea in Estonia looking for a spot to camp. We had been wrongly informed about a campsite somewhere in that area. Since none of us understood any Estonian we confused a sign to a summer camp for Estonian children from Tallinn for one pointing us toward said camp site. We were lucky though since it turned out that they had a free log cabin hut there and a young camp overseer who was probably bored by the company of only children and a few elderly staff members. He invited us to stay there, and we were treated to typical Estonian summer camp food and in the evening we were invited into the traditional Estonian sauna, which was new experience for all of us. We stayed for two nights to recuperate before continuing our bicycle tour.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you the basics of knitting, crochet and programming and probably a few other things. You'll be on yourself when it's about reaching mastery however. Also, if you wanna know what kind of tree is growing in front of your window I may be able to tell you which one (even though I may have to look up its name in English).

What I Can Share with Hosts

If you're into long discussions about pretty much any topic I'll happily have those with you. Also, if you're into board games but most of your friends aren't you'll find a willing partner in me. Finally I'm more than willing to bring a warm dinner to the table of my host every evening for the duration of my stay. Expect me to be stressed and confused in my replies while cooking though. I'm not good at multi-tasking and unknown kitchens are a very stressful experience for me.
