Actually I have only participated in CS as a surfer and I definitely and absolutely consider it one of the best inventions in the last decades..

If you are staying at an conventional hostel, you may get to know other likable travellers - but in most cases, you percieve country and people from "the outside"
However, if you enjoy a CS hospitality and youfriendliness you live and spent time with those open-minded people, you join/interact with locals and society - just becoming PART OF THE WHOLE!

referring to my personal experience, i have met loads of great characters during my trips, some people who i now consider my real friends - awsome...
