About Me
CURRENT MISSION
Desperately seeking procrastination outlets.
ABOUT ME
I only respond to inquiries that include the pass phrase I've included in my couch description. Please read my profile and write to tell me why you'd like to spend time with me and why I'd like to spend time with you.
I'm a technology journalist, and I write about information security and technology careers. I typically keep bees, but I lost my last hive and need to get more, probably in the 2013 season. I'm mad about organic gardening, and my yard is a jungle full of birds and fruit that I wish the birds would let me eat.
PHILOSOPHY
People with enlarged amygdalasâÃâ¬Ãâthe fear processing part of the brainâÃâ¬Ãâtend to be conservative. People who CouchSurf tend to be liberal and have nonswollen amygdalas. I think there's an essay in there somewhere. I love it that CouchSurfers are open to different ways of living life and are unafraid of meeting anybody and everybody. They're my kind of people.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I have finally lost my CouchSurfing virginity.
For almost a year, I hosted people from all over, but I never slept on another couch in my travels. Finally I can say I've experienced CouchSurfing both from host and guest sides, thanks to Alec and his yurt in Vermont (I stayed a night when I was up to Goddard College for the MFA commencement) and Marga's hospitality in Falmouth, MA, and also thanks to my dear friend Jim, whom I met initially as a guest on my couch but who took me to stay with Marga on the Cape.
I like to host travelers who take the time to read my profile and determine that they'd like to spend time with me, I like to host parties, I like to show people my beloved town, meet up for coffee or for any kind of adventure. I'm also up for showing people around Boston or just meeting up for fun.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I just got back from a trip to the Midwest and was amazed at how gracious, generous, fun-loving, open-hearted and welcoming the CouchSurfers were whom I was lucky enough to befriend in my travels. I've done lots of hosting, but this was the first real, extended trip I've taken as a surfer. It made me fall in love with the community even more!
Interests
Organic gardening, beekeeping, creative writing, Buddhism, dancing (particularly Zumba and bellydancing), theater, photography, Burning Man, snorkeling, kayaking, bicycling, thumb-wrestling, billiards, Frisbee, keeping chickens, keeping bunnies, finding people to watch scary movies or any other kind of movies with me, hoop dancing, fire dancing, learning new languages, singing, lots of other things that have "ing" at the end. Some of these things I haven't done yet but I'm on a path to find out, including fire dancing. Teach me whatever you know!

Music, Movies, and Books
I like music with notes. I like movies with pictures. I like books with words. I like all sorts of stuff. Except Manga. I'm not big into Manga.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
The most amazing thing I've done is travel down to New Orleans and help Habitat for Humanity rebuild after Katrina. I'd like to do more service work like that. I'm thinking of WWOOFing. Some day, after my dear cats have passed into their next incarnation, I might explore living communally. I mean, moreso than I am now. An equally amazing thing I've done is attend Goddard College to get my MFA in their primarily self-directed program of study.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can teach you what I know about beekeeping and urban organic farming. Can teach you how to get back into your kayak if you fall out. Can teach you how to get all the meat out of a lobster that typically people ignore. Can teach you the difference between genre fiction and poetry and why literary people tend to snub pulp fiction. Can talk to you about neuroanatomy from an enthusiast's nonprofessional perspective. Can teach you how to treat a diabetic suffering hypoglycemia.
