Über mich

Warum ich bei Couchsurfing bin

I always loved the travelling with my family when I was a kid. My parents, my father in particular, always tried to make those few weeks in summer the best weeks of the year! He really put great effort and time in finding the best holidays: some cultural things, some not-touristic things, but especially things you could never do at home. We were once on a self-built raft in Sweden for 7 days, on a big river. Another time we were in the Alpes with three other families we didn't know before, and a local who showed us around. And a few years ago we hiked along the coast of Corsica. Besides those big holidays, we often went to de Ardennen (BE), in a little chalet, just to do some walks in the woods and escape from luxury.

When I grew older, I had some opportunities to travel, without my family. A choir in which I used to sing went on a tour to South Africa for three weeks, so I went there with 40 other girls. When I left, I only knew 4 persons really well, but at the end I called them all my sisters! Travelling is one of the best ways to make friends! We did a similar trips 4 years later to Namibia. On both of those trips, we also met people from other choirs and stayed at their homes and it is amazing to share culture with them and have a good time together, although you know that you might never see most of them again.

Last summer, the family of my boyfriend offered me to join them to visit their family in the United States. I have to make a footnote to the word 'family', because viewed from a biological standpoint they are not really. My boyfriend's father went there as a student for one year, and kept in touch with his host family all that time, untill his eldest son was a student himself and went there as well for a year. I went for 6 weeks to live with them and it was absolutely amazing! All members of the family are mormons. At first I did not really know a lot about it, and I didn't know any of them, but now I feel so grateful that I met them and I really appreciate the way the live and believe. I feel more grateful for all the chances I have got in my life. I send an email to grandmother Betty twice in a month and from time to time a hear something from the cousins.

I am currently doing an erasmus exchange semester in Ireland. I came all by myself and I haven't regret this for a moment! I have met wonderful people and we have all been amazed by the cultural differences, although we are all from Europe. It feels like I have learned so many things I would never have learned through any other medium than coming here and meeting them. So many expierces in such a short time....

Travelling around and seeing the world is one of the best things in life, but I think it is even greater to meet new people who can share their experiences with you!
