Overview
About Me
CURRENT MISSION
Publish some journalistic work, and travel and experience the next year in Turkey.
ABOUT ME
After a long absence from Couchsurfing I am back on to host and connect during the next year in Istanbul, Turkey.
Originally from Canada, and currently enrolled at the University of King's College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I have come to Istanbul to be with my girlfriend and hopefully do some journalistic work. I hope to travel around the city and country and do some reporting while continuing my studies at Istanbul's Bogazici University.
If you live in Istanbul or are just visiting, I would love to meet and drink some Turkish coffee, take in some local music, or explore the city streets together.
PHILOSOPHY
This used to be a lot easier to fill out, but a liberal arts education has made things a lot more complicated...
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I have surfed across Europe and had some great times, so now it's my turn to repay the debt. I have only met the best people through CS, and hopefully I will meet many more.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
Overwhelmingly positive! I have been hosted several times now, always by really nice and interesting people.

Music, Movies, and Books
To keep this updated is pretty difficult. Here's a semi-current list:
Jazz: Gordon, Davis, Coltrane, Ellington, Krupa, Gershwin, Jarett, Holiday, Armstrong, Powell, Thelonious, & Dr. Lonnie Smith to start. Some newer names... Ahmed Jamal, BADBADNOTGOOD, Shaolin Afronauts, The Bad Plus, Tonda Trio, and some electroswing. Getting into afrobeat and middle eastern fusion right now. Send me suggestions!
Hip-Hop: The historical greats (Nas, Biggie, 2Pac, and Wu-Tang, to start) plus Mac Miller, OFWGKTA, Chinese Man, the Beatnuts, Captain Murphy, Joey Bada$$, Kendrick Lamar, Typical Cats, MF DOOM, Digable Planets, Mountain Brothers, PRT, any of that funky shiiiit.
Other music: Generally acoustic folky jams and funk music I can dig. I like new music but I'm too lazy to look for it usually, so hit me up.
All-time Favourite: Dr. Dog. If you haven't heard them, their chill vibes are worth a listen.
Books: I read a lot of non-fiction. I'd like some fiction recommendations if you've got them!
Movies: The more the better
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I flooded the museum of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., by clogging an industrial scale toilet as the result of a week-long stomach illness.
Teach, Learn, Share
I would love to learn how to cook new meals, how to speak a couple phrases in any language, strange trivia, etc., etc... really anything! In particular, I'm looking to bone up on my Arabic and French, and if someone knows a lot about any religious tradition, I'd love to be proselytized to.
I can teach the basics of competitive improv, a bit about Canadian history and some jazz piano, and some broadcasting stuff like interview techniques. If there's someone out there who actually wants to learn the root causes of the English Reformation or what John Locke thought of the New World slave trade, I suppose I could teach that too.
I have more to learn than to teach, though!
