I’m Litu Mohiuddin—a British-Bangladeshi chef and food writer on a mission to deconstruct curry in order to decolonise it.

Imagine this: you have a bowl of curry in front of you—any country, any version—and a world map beside it. Now remove the spices and herbs one by one, placing each back on the map where it came from. Suddenly, you’re tracing ancient maritime spice routes, entangled with colonialism, the slave trade, and indentured labour migrations. Out of that displacement, people rebuilt their food through memory—turning curry into a story of survival and creativity.

That’s the heart of my journey. Since June 2024, I’ve been travelling along historic spice trade routes while researching my upcoming book, “From Kari to Curry: Masala, Memory and Migration”. It explores how spices and people carry stories across borders, blending my background in sustainable, migration-inspired cuisine into a no-waste philosophy.

I’m relatively new to Couchsurfing and haven’t had the chance to host yet, but it’s already become essential to my travels—where genuine connection and shared hospitality truly shine.
I carry a small pouch of spices gathered along the way and love cooking simple, soulful meals with hosts—sharing food, stories, and the sense that this journey isn’t just research, but a way of relearning and reconnecting. It’s become my spiritual endeavour.
