One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I have always been an active person in both my professional life and recreational life. I have always enjoyed the outdoors and what it has to offer and would love to have a chance to learn more each day I am alive. The past 6 months I was able to live that life and enjoyed every minute of it. I was sent on a 20 mile backcountry hike into Sequoia National Park for 4 weeks in which I was in charge of a crew of 12 volunteers. Our mission was to remove invasive species (Velvet Grass) throughout various regions of the Southeast corner (Kern Canyon) of the park. I hiked over 100 miles on my off days and over the 4 weeks I hiked 200 miles for work. It was an experience of a lifetime. I worked in Lake Tahoe for the majority of my time out west. I was an assistant supervisor on a trail crew that worked on Mt. Tallac in Tahoe. We worked with the US Forest Service. Our mission was to build preventive erosion methods (waterbars, check steps, retention walls, Staircases, re-routing the trail, maintaining the trail, and keeping the trail safe). In October I was sent to supervise a crew in Kentucky (Cumberland Gap area) in which we were working with the National Park Service as trail crew. I am certified in Wilderness First Aid and have experience in the medical field from my previous jobs. I can say that I have learned a lot about the conservation realm over the past 6 months and would love to share my knowledge with others and to learn from others that I meet each day. Over the summer in 2011, I was a backcountry hiking guide in Alaska, in Denali National Park. I cannot even begin to type out that experience. Have to tell ya about it in person.
