About Me

CURRENT MISSION
Settling in Hobart after a year and a half in a small Tasmanian town.

ABOUT ME
I am half Norwegian half Australian, and between those two similar extremes, have traveled and lived widely. I was, as a youth, much more cerebral than I am now, having been devoted to music, literature, philosophy and various theologies. I've been able to balance that with good long wilderness hikes, mostly alone but sometimes with a companion.

In my middle age I have fewer "heady" questions, and presume no fundamental answers. I try to be open to the small things in life as well as the enormity of the cosmos, and try to appreciate and give thanks for everything, the good and the bad. I'm at times serious, but also love to have fun, and enjoy a dry sense of humour (self irony, very British!).

PHILOSOPHY

Open to the enormity of silence.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am often available to host. I'm currently all booked out with family for Christmas and house sitters until February. I last couch surfed in Egypt, Jordan and Syria in 2010. In the last year, I had a number of of guests at my house in Cygnet, in southern Tasmania, and here in Hobart. I can sometimes host at my house in Lutana, in Hobart.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

In 2010 I stayed in Cairo Egypt, Dahab, Sinai, and Aleppo and Damascus in Syria. The experience has been much more than being a guest. I have sensed friendships developing.

Music, Movies, and Books

Too many to list. I like history and classical music, among other things.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I used to climb mountains (not the Himalayas or Andes, no, lol). In 2007 I started to climb Mount Ararat in Turkey alone, and got halfway up, nearly to the ice, but bad weather made me turn back. Two Kurdish shepherds in a hut gave me shelter and food, and while my clothes dried we had an amazing (very slow) conversation using my small Turkish-English dictionary. They had never eaten chocolate before! And they told me I was crazy to go there alone.

Countries I’ve Visited
