ABOUT ME

I am a fluid being right now, in a self-acknowledged liminal state of learning and experiencing, teaching and sharing. My name is Logan, and I think it is a good name for me. I am a poet, actor, director, and I predominately hope to affect the world in a positive way through art. I haven't traveled all that much, though I would like to see as much of the world as possible. Right now I am a resident artist at a theater in Philadelphia, developing new works. I am a thesis senior student currently studying remotely at a liberal arts school in sunny Florida, double majoring in Religious Studies and Theater.

MY PHILOSOPHY

Is there a separate philosophy to life other the way we live it? I really don't think so. Upon reading Conrad's Heart of Darkness,
I came away with something really beneficial. His protagonist has a line of dialogue about belief and life: "Principles?" he asks, "Principles won't do. Acquisitions, clothes, pretty rags — rags that would fly off at the first good shake. No; you want a deliberate belief." I take this to mean that you can't just say you stand for something, you cannot simply say that you hold something to be true, you must enact it. If you do something because you are so moved to do it, then /there/ is your belief! I live as I believe.

I believe in the freedom of human creativity and expression. I believe art is a beautiful product of the soul and that it should be free to access without gatekeepers determining who and what "make the cut" and who and what do not. I believe in the ability of theater and live performance to change the lives of people, and the way people see the world. Because we don't see the world through screens or phones or keyboards or game controllers; this is not life. Life is real people and we see them with our own eyes, no intermediary or boundary necessary. Therefore, I believe that the stage is the best way with which to influence the minds of our world; we need an element of liveness. This is why I work to create for the stage, so that I too can help bring an end to social and political inequities in this world through profound demonstration of Life.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

Created art that moved people!

Two years ago, I entered a poem contest created by poet Billy Collins and made it to the final round and won. The winning was not the best part. After the concluding ceremony, I got a chance to just have a conversation with Mr. Collins. We talked about the best ways to get good ideas into words and how to translate the imagination into language and about the inadequacies of language to communicate imagination. We talked about our favorite methods for recording those words. He implored me to keep writing, and if not poetry, than something; and dammit that felt really good.

In February, 2015, I created an experimental performance piece in an arts warehouse space that placed audience members on the other side of the confessional grate, wherein they were subjected to the confessions of all different kinds of people, played by a remarkably talented cast of actors with an original script. The piece was aimed to illustrate the breakdown of morality in the face of the coexistence of modernity and traditional religious values. Over the course of the show, the actors' monologues became more spoken sound than spoken word, and a friend created a rapturous tonal accompaniment to create a literal wall of incomprehensible sound to wash over the spectators sitting inside the small booths. The audience was viscerally affected, as I had hoped they would be. The lessons I learned from this project are invaluable to me.
