About Me

Hi, I'm Laura, from Bristol. I have lived here most of my life but my nursing has taken me to Reading and short stints in New Zealand, and Ireland. Now looking for the next move.

Over time, I'd like to make it to world events and festivals, as well as explore more of the UK. I particularly enjoy being outdoors, and hiking or canoeing.

PHILOSOPHY

No regrets. It's no good looking back at what could have been said or done, do the best you can at the time.

Don't wait for other people.

"Life's a journey...travel well"

And finally...On being asked to remember something, - "The bluntest pencil is better than the sharpest brain!"

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm just about still on Couchsurfing because of the positive changes it brought to my life. I no longer participate to a great degree, unfortunately due to the difficulty of moving around it and a gradual decrease in participation. My activity on it tends to be more in the Facebook groups, but I hope that occasionally I will find myself using it to meet other locals and keep a little of the old activity going.

I'm glad I saw the project at it's best, however and made countless connections with others. I miss the regular interactions.

I am a member to meet like-minded people and experience new destinations as a local. I stayed active in the past by attending and organising events and have been tour guide in my home groups. Through this, I saw my own home in a new light.

- "The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.” – G.K. Chesterton

I'm happy to give advice where it's needed, so drop me a message and I'll see if I can help.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I first surfed in Scotland, I've shown people round Bristol, attended and organised local events, even lodged. No two encounters have been the same!

I've realised that a large part of travelling is the people you meet - it enables you to do this as well as meet locals, some of whom have become friends, some whom I've ended up arranging further trips with, and creating good memories with.

I've met like-minded people who also have real passions for anything that is travel, travel-related or culture. People like this are hard to come by in everyday life, let alone to be actively doing something about their ambitions, so I'm grateful to those who have shared their experiences with me.

It is becoming difficult, however.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Comedy, light entertainment.

Books: Not much of a reader, but I've enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha (Arthur Golden), The Other Boleyn Girl (Philippa Gregory), Children of the Dust (Louise Lawrence).

Music: Not a massive follower of music, or fan of anything particular. Folky and rock genres are probably my favourite.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Took a group of special needs children on holiday to the Pyrenees.

Completed the Cotswolds Way national trail, along with the 3 peaks of England, Scotland and Wales. We then went to Ireland to complete the highest in the 4 provinces and have one to go.

I have sailed tall ships and would like to become competent.

Teach, Learn, Share

I occasionally try to learn Spanish and German, so any help is much appreciated.

Perhaps share a true Bristol accent? It's known, but we don't all speak like farmers or use the colloquialisms.

I am aware that I cannot cook well, but that my skills lie a little more in baking.

Countries I’ve Visited

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City State
