About Me

My name is Tyral or just Ty

Have been traveling abroad for over 5 years now with the mission to circumnavigate the world without flying. Currently on my way to Vancouver to settle there for a bit and hopefully find a job for the first time since leaving Australia in 2014.

Short brief of the last 5 years:
- Sailed from Australia through Indonesia, Maylasia and Thailand over 6 months
- Hitchhiked through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia
- Motorbiked south to north Vietnam over 2 months
- Hitchhiked/trained through China
- Trans Mongolian railway through Mongolia/ Russia to Europe
- Traveled western Europe, lived in Berlin, Germany and then Copenhagen, Denmark for about a year
- Hitchhiked from Finland to Turkey through eastern Europe
- Settled on an abandoned farm in France for a few months
- Joined 'The Longest Swim', sailing their support boat from the UK to the Caribbean, through the panama canal and finally San Diego, USA
- Sailed to Hawaii and back to California
- Hitchhiked and rode the chicken buses down to Costa Rica from California, then delivered a boat from Costa Rica back the states
- Lived in a warehouse in LA while building the expedition 'The longest swim' later changed to the 'The Swim' (a project escorting open water long distance swimmer Ben Lecomte attempt to swim the Pacific Ocean)
- Sailed the support vessel for 'the swim' from California to Japan
- Spent 165 days at sea helping Ben attempt the swim from Japan back to California, until some damage from bad weather made us retreat to Hawaii
- Spent 6 months living in Hawaii building a new expedition - 'the vortex swim', a swim through the center of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (highest accumulation zone of ocean plastic in the world) to raise awareness for plastic pollution
- Spent another 80 days at sea for 'the vortex swim' collecting data on ocean plastic and raising awareness on the issue

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To meet local people. To get in behind the scenes of the tourist sites and really interact with people. Meeting people from different cultures and countries is what it is all about. New and real experiences. Backpackers and dormitories make me feel old

Music, Movies, and Books

Mostly stuff that falls under indie. No top 40 shit or pop. Unless it's the first album from Savage Garden, Australian legends from the early 2000s. Do yourself a favour and listen to "to the moon an back" or any of the first 6 songs on that album. Lyrical genius. It will melt your heart and change your life for ever

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Drove an electric dinghy across the pacific ocean escorting a swimmer attempting to create a world record, we lived with a full camera crew who filmed everything that will later be released as a documentary to help raise awareness around plastic pollution in our ocean.

When everything failed due to bad weather we were forced to rethink the approach, creating 'The Vortex Swim' an effort to explore the highest concentration zone of ocean plastic in the world.

After two long expeditions we finally completed the most comprehensive data set on ocean plastic in the world. Also helping raise awareness to the issue across the the world.
