About Me

I am a former volunteer with Youth For Understanding and have hosted 19 high school students (or recent graduates who have returned) from 9 different countries, for periods ranging from 1 night to 5 weeks. I have traveled throughout the USA and much of Europe, including meeting up with YFU students in Finland, Germany, and Denmark. I lived in Jerusalem for 1 semester and used to be able to speak Hebrew. In addition, I have studied Latin and French.

I also have volunteered with an international adoption agency, an organization providing free clothing to disadvantaged children in the Denver area, a nationally recognized hospital, and local volleyball programs (as a coach). I have worked on political campaigns and try to remain active politically when possible.

I potentially have 2 spare bedrooms (when my grown kids aren't here), plus a partially finished basement with a convertible couch. I do have allergies and mild asthma, so I cannot accept pets or smoking in my home.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love showing off Denver (with 300 days of sunshine per year) to people from other places and other cultures. My home is large enough that there usually is room for guests, and I hate to waste the space. I'm here because of a YFU student from Sweden whom I first met in Hawaii and whom I recently saw in Berlin. He recommended the site to me.

My home is not in central Denver, which might make it inconvenient for some. However, there is a bus stop nearby, and the light rail to Denver is just a short bus ride away. When possible, I like to show guests around as much of the area as possible.

Interests

I love sports, and I play softball, tennis, and volleyball (depending on the season). I did coach some volleyball (mostly middle school), but now I have retired from that activity.

I enjoy reading anything from the newspaper to books of all sorts.

I take politics very seriously, and what goes on in this small world makes a difference to me. I strive to make a difference too.

Music, Movies, and Books

Too many to name, but I don't listen to metal, hip-hop, or country music, and I don't enjoy gory or scary movies.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I enjoy telling my students from Germany that I've been to 2 Germanies (or is it 2 Germanys?), East and West. I first crossed the Wall 25 years before it came down. Then, in 2014, 25 years after the Wall fell, my son and I walked freely around the wall and the area it had occupied.

Teach, Learn, Share

I enjoy learning about new cultures and even learning words in different languages, although I don't think I could ever learn to pronounce any words in Danish (except simple ones such as "tusind tak"). Let's talk about what it takes to make the world a better place.
